(Use strategies such as relating to facts already known, applying the commutative property, and grouping facts into families.)

  3. What is a fact family? A fact family has 3 members. Together they make up 4 different number sentences. 2 number sentences are additon and 2 are subtraction.

  4. Think Step: Think of a fact family as a happy family with 3 members. An example would be: 2 3 5

  5. The members live in a house that has 4 bedrooms. 2 of which hold an addition fact and 2 of which hold a subtraction fact.

  6. So, what does a fact family look like? If the members are 2, 3, and 5 . . . . Then the number sentences would look like this 2+3=5 3+2=5 5-2=3 5-3=2

  7. Now you try . . . Use your white board to write the number sentences for the members of the following fact family. 1 4 5

  8. Here’s what your fact family house should look like . . . 1+4=5 4+1=5 5-4=1 5-1=4
