  1. Status of implementation Result area 2:Development of Operational services FaraiMarumbwa

  2. Outline • Context: -AMESD Key result areas • SADC THEMA Achievements as 31 August 2012 per service • Software utililities • AMESD SADC Policy Workshop, 9 October 2012, Gaborone, Botswana

  3. INTRODUCTION • Result 1 : Improved access by African users to existing basic Earth Observation, field and ancillary data • Result 2 : Operational information services are established to improve decision-making processes in the fields of environmental management and other policies • Result 3 : Political and policy development frameworks are strengthened to ensure active and sustainable participation of African governments in global environmental surveillance. • Result 4 : An adequate technical level of AMESD African stakeholders is permanently ensured • AMESD SADC Policy Workshop, 9 October 2012, Gaborone, Botswana

  4. Intoduction Three core service developments (Agriculture, Drought and Fire services) were foreseen in the AMESD SADC THEMA

  5. Intoduction: Structure of the processing Chains

  6. AGRICULTURAL SERVICE: Progress Expected result:Development of 39 Production chains for Agriculture (by BDMS) Service: Allows MoA to perform crop condition monitoring and yield estimates

  7. Crops Models Agriculture Service The service is building on the SADC FANR crop monitoring activities Agric Areas Livestock Agromet Up-dates Principle: • Improve and expand the former REWS systems from SADC-RRSU. • Automation and dissemination via EUMETcast- using the E-station

  8. Agricultural Service: Progress Achievements: • Automated production chains (95%) completed • First issue of agriculture report for Nov 2011 issued by BDMS

  9. Example of the Agricultural Bulletin. First issue of agriculture report for Nov 2011 issued by BDMS

  10. 2) DROUGHT SERVICE: • The Drought Service - monitor drought during the whole year and deliver a decadal “Drought map” and a “Drought Outlook” in support of both agriculture and environmental issues • Expected result: All 17 production chains and software for Drought are developed within the first year (May 2011)

  11. 2) Drought Service Developed by ARC and BDMS The drought service relies heavily on the development of an open source drought monitoring software using GRASS

  12. 2) Drought Service The drought software capacitates users to develop drought products that helps to inform decision makers regarding drought situations in their countries

  13. 2) Drought Service Some examples of drought products generated by the DMS

  14. 2) Drought Service: Achievements Achievements: 17 out of 17 (100%) production chains for Drought products complete. Two upgraded versions released Users trained on the use of the drought software

  15. 3. FIRE SERVICE: • Expected result: All 5 production chains and software for Fire are developed within the first year (May 2011). • Service development is done by CSIR-MERAKA

  16. 3. Fire Service : Service: • Developed by CISR and is very ideal for users that need near real time fire information in remote areas where Internet access is limited or unavailable • The AMESD Fire service allows MoE • to assess the fire risk • to detect new bushfires, • to monitor the movement of existing fires • to assess the damage of fires (burnt areas)

  17. Fire Service : Achievements Achievements: Production automation 100% Complete • Service = AMESD fire station (v2) released • All products are ready to be used by NFP’s. • Help desk in place.

  18. Long Range Forecast (LRF) : Progress Expected result: • All 3 production chains and software for LRF (by SAWS) is developed within the first year (May 2011)

  19. Long Range Forecast (LRF) : Progress • The LRF service comes in as a support service to the agriculture, drought and fire service. • Developed By SAWS • Integration the LRF in the agric service will enable users embed a “Seasonal Outlook” in the three services. • The LRF support service deliver the following forecasts: 1) “Rainfall” X 3, 2)“Minimum Temperature X 3” and 3)“Maximum Temperature X 3”.

  20. Long Range Forecast (LRF) : Achievements • Achievements: • Automated production chains (100%) completed • Perspectives: • Perspectives 1: enables NFPs’ to fully Intergate LFF service into (Drought /Agriculture/Fire).

  21. SUMMARY: SERVICE DEVELOPMENT & DISSEMINATION

  22. ADDITIONAL Tools for the services: AMESD-SADC TOOL BOX • Dedicated GEONETCast Toolbox for AMESDSADC Earth Observation Services in ILWIS Open • The toolbox is meant for ingesting AMESD SADC products into a GIS environment (ILWIS ) for further processing • Data products disseminated via EUMETCast

  23. AMESD-SADC GNC toolbox: snapshots An Ilwis open v.3.72 plug-in • Rainfall analysis and • Onset of rainy season • determination • Biomass and crops • Graphic output: Cumulative • dry matter productivity • ABBA-MSG fire incidence

  24. USER SUPPORT AND FEEDBACK: Discussion Forum • Three categories of discussion forums (Receiving station , Products and service and AMESD SADC THEMA IWLWIS Toolbox forums) exist under SADC THEMA website. –www.amesd.co.bw
