  1. Transfer Basics for New Counselors

  2. Session Overview Admission Requirements Eligibility vs. Selection UC Evaluation of the Academic Record The Admission Process Resources

  3. UC’s Definition of a CCC Applicant UC defines a CCC transfer applicant as: • one who has completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) UC-transferable units at one or more California community colleges; and • the last college the student attended in a regular session (fall/spring or fall/winter/spring) before admission to a UC campus is/was a California community college.

  4. Minimum Admission Requirements Requirements for junior level transfer: • 60 UC-transferable semester (90 quarter) units • 2.4 GPA in UC-transferable courses • Complete the required 7-course pattern, with a grade of C or better in each course, by the end of spring term prior to fall admission 7-course pattern: • 2 in English composition • 1 in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning • 4 in at least 2 of these areas Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences

  5. Major Preparation Prepares students for upper-division. Selective majors evaluate students based on major preparation completed prior to transfer. Major prerequisite coursework may be a higher priority than general education requirements for some campuses. Major preparation requirements can be found on the ASSIST website.

  6. General Education Requirements Each school and college at every UC campus has general education “breadth” requirements. CCC students have the option to complete IGETC to satisfy lower-division GE requirements. • IGETC is not requiredfor admission. Completing GE, either through IGETC or campus-specific requirements, may be a selection requirement for some campuses and programs. Be sure GE/IGETC pattern is appropriate for the intended campus and major.

  7. UC Transfer Preparation Paths A tool to advise students early based on either their intended major or their campus of interest. • Admission requirementsStudents may determine minimum eligibility for UC campus and additional requirements. • Transfer path by major (statewide)Students may use this path to take coursework to prepare for multiple UC campuses in their major of choice. • Transfer path by campus (campus specific)Students may use this path to identify required coursework at a specific campus for a specific major or similar majors. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/preparation-paths

  10. Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP) An online tool to help prospective transfer students plan and track their course work. The tool is designed for use by students transferring from California community colleges to UC. Students can use the TAP to enter their course work. The planner helps students track their progress toward meeting UC's minimum requirements, and allows UC staff to communicate important information to prospective transfer students. All information collected is considered confidential and is shared only with students' community colleges, UC admissions officers, and UC Education Partnership Programs personnel.

  11. ASSIST.ORG Online information system that provides the most accurate and up-to-date information for California transfer students. • Shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. • Explore majors available at UC and CSU campuses. • Is the official repository of articulation for California’s colleges and universities. Allows students to explore transferable coursework from the CCC to the UC using: • Transferable Course Agreement (TCA) • CCC to UC Major Articulation (UC-CCC Course Articulation)

  12. Transferable Course Agreement (TCA) on assist.org Identifies UC-transferable courses at each CCC. First level of articulation between UC and CCC; all courses listed aretransferable to everyUC campus. Individual UC campuses may, as appropriate, articulate courses to specific lower-division courses/ graduation requirements.

  13. CCC to UC Major Articulation The CCC-UC Major Articulation Agreements offer students guidance in preparing for specific majors at each UC campus. Second level of articulation between UC and CCC. Indicates courses that fulfill major prep; alerts if IGETC is acceptable; explains use of AP/IB credit toward subject requirements, etc.

  14. The Review Process The UC Evaluation of the Academic Record After the Transfer Academic Update (TAU) is received the review begins (fall grades, work in progress/planned). Evaluators review the applicant’s self-reported courses and grades term by term to determine whether the courses are UC-transferable and to derive a cumulative GPA.

  15. Gaps In Education UC evaluators review begin and end dates of attended institutions. Any gaps in education will require an explanation.

  16. Language of Instruction The high school’s Language of Instruction determines whether credit is awarded for lower division language courses.

  17. Exam Credit—AP, IB and A levels • Credit may be awarded: Up to 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units per exam may be awarded. Credit limitations may apply in some subject areas; and when exams and equivalent courses are taken. • Toward major prep and GE with AP scores of 3 or higher or IB Higher Level scores of 5 or higher. (Course equivalencies depend on campus articulation) • Toward IGETC requirements refer to: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/CC11_UsingAPfor Admission_final.pdf

  18. Transferability and Limitations Non UC-transferable courses: (check TCA on Assist.org) Courses with credit limitations: PE, Math, Science, ESL Courses taken out of sequence: Math, Chemistry, LOTE Unit Limits: P/CR credits, coursework series (e.g. Physics) Repeats for “D”s & “F”s (unlimited); credit for first course completed with “C” or better; no duplication of AP/IB credit AR, NP, NG, W = neutral/no credit/no effect on GPA

  19. Example: Non-Transferable Coursework Evaluators will determine if a course is transferable based on UC guidelines and TCAs (for CCCs)

  20. Example 1: Credit Limitations 8 sem (12 qtr) advanced ESL units allowed

  21. Example 2: Credit Limitations Maximum: 4 sem (6 qtr) units PE activity allowed Maximum: 8 sem (12 qtr) units PE theory allowed

  22. Example: Repeated Coursework

  23. Lower Division Unit Maximum Limitation All lower division unit (freshman/sophomore level) coursework will be limited to a maximum of 70 semester (or 105 quarter) units toward the UC degree, regardless of the type of institution where the credit was earned (2 or 4yr). UC courses (LD/UD) are not subject to this limitation. Transferable units beyond this limit earn subject credit only. Fact Sheet: UC Maximum Transfer Credit Limitation Policy http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf

  24. Example 1: Lower Division Unit Max San Diego State University coursework plus City College of San Francisco coursework with only lower division units 15 sem LD units SDSU + 60 sem LD units CCSF 75 sem LD units - 5 excess LD units 70 sem units awarded by UC

  25. Example 2: Lower Division Unit Max Santa Monica College coursework plus Santa Clara University coursework with both lower and upper division units 60 sem LD units SMC + 3 sem LD units SCU 63 sem LD units + 17 sem UD units SCU 80 sem units awarded by UC

  26. Example 3: Lower Division Unit Max Modesto Junior College coursework plus UC Merced coursework (applying to transfer to a different UC campus) 76.5 sem LD units MJC - 6.5 excess LD units 70 sem LD units + 16 sem UD units UCM 86 sem units awarded by UC

  27. The Personal Statement To gain a better understanding of the students background; their interest in and purpose of their intended major. UC campuses may use the personal statement as an admissions factor or for scholarship consideration.

  28. Comprehensive Review To understand context for each applicant, campuses may review all other aspects of the application information such as: • Awards, Activities • Employment • Volunteer work • Additional Comments

  29. The Decision Process Step 1: Selection of Applicants Step 2: Notification to Students Step 3: After the Decision

  30. Meeting Conditions of Admission Steps students must complete: Complete spring coursework with C or better grades Minimum grade(s) required Submit official transcripts by 7/1 Submit all other documents/exam scores by 7/15 Extended spring term Summer courses

  31. Waitlist & Appeals The waitlist process is used to manage new student enrollment A waitlist offer is an acknowledgement of an applicant’s strength, not a guarantee of admission Waitlisted students can accept waitlist offers to more than one UC campus Students cannot appeal to be placed on the waitlist

  32. Online Resources Includes counselor resources and information for advising transfer applicants. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/ downloadable-guides/index.html
