  5. California State University • 23 Universities • Reasonable cost • Offers flexibility: Day or Evening Programs Full or Part-time programs

  6. University of California • 8 undergraduate campuses • Reasonable cost • Research institutions

  7. Independent/Privates • Over 70 Independent colleges and universities • Each campus: Is Unique Varied Requirements Different Application Deadlines

  8. Transfer Course Requirements • General Education (GE) • Lower Division • Electives • Upper Division

  9. General Education Requirements (GE) • Courses required of everyone to obtain a bachelor’s degree • GE courses should be completed at PCC prior to transferring • Provide background and preparation for the major

Lower Division Requirements • Also called major prep requirements • These courses should be completed at PCC prior to transferring • Provide background and preparation for the major and may fulfill some of the GE requirements • Most majors require the completion of specific lower division courses before transferring

  11. Electives • Transferable courses which can be taken in addition to the major prep and general education courses • May be taken at PCC before transferring and after transferring at the university

  12. Upper Division • Courses taken at the university • Concentration in an academic major • Completed at the university granting the degree

  13. Transferable Courses vs.Non-Transferable Courses Courses numbered 1-99 WILL transfer Courses numbered 100-499 WILL NOT transfer

IGETC • Courses satisfy general education requirements for the CSU and the UC • Developed to simplify the transfer process for students • Must be completed with a grade of C or better • IGETC is not for everyone: Not for high-unit major Not for majors requiring extensive lower division preparation, (i.e. engineering, architecture, physical &natural sciences)

  15. CSU G.E. • California State University General Education Breadth Requirements • Students only planning to transfer to CSU may follow the CSU GE sheet

  17. Educational Plan - Counselor • An Educational Plan identifies the courses needed for transferring to a four-year college or university • It lists the courses that should be taken every semester at PCC to complete general education, lower division and elective courses

  18. PCC Degree & Transfer Center • University representatives • Application workshops and essay review • Informational events (i.e. transfer fairs) • Reference books and online resources • Pre-screen PCC transcript • Transfer research
