Background Information • Establish in 1981 by Dr. Bosomworth, Debbie Marcum, and Mary Quattrocchi • Called Central Kentucky Riding for Handicapped and it was so successful they renamed it Central Kentucky Riding for Hope • 1987 CKRH became accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. • Currently, College courses for equine therapy are taught at CKRH along with highly-competitive internships

Mission Statement • Central Kentucky Riding for Hope is dedicated to enriching the community by improving the quality of life and the health of children and adults with special physical, cognitive, emotional and social needs through therapeutic activities with the horse. • Provide a safe environment • Volunteers are the center of CKRH • Maintain excellence in caring for the horse herd

Overview of Activities at CKRH • Therapeutic Riding: Equine activities taught during the day and evenings for handicapped and disabled people • Hippotherapy: Occupational or speech therapy treatment that utilizes equine movement • Therapeutic Horsemanship: Student instructors expand their knowledge in horse care, handling, and riding • Competition: Pony Club certified Regional and national horse races

Daily Activities • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, (9a.m. to 5p.m.) & Saturday morning we will be working on various activities with horses, assisting with Stable Kids (teaching behavioral kids at the barn), and fixing up the barn. • Monday we will have orientation in order to be prepared to work with their horses and Stable Kids. • The local church is VERY kind to host us for the week…so ASB would “garden” for them once we were done volunteering at CKRH for the day. It’ll only take a couple hours! Plus, they are offering to cook for us. Yum! • Cannot work directly as side-walkers for the horses because that requires weeks of training, but ANY help given to CKRH INDIRECTLY helps the sidewalkers and the therapy sessions. You WILL have an opportunity to teach and help with the horses with the Stable Kids. • Wednesday is our free day. I HAVE AN IDEA…!!

  6. Wednesday Fun Day • Possible adventure on our “free day”…two hours to and from Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. • Second largest cave national park in the nation • Group/student pricing…$10-$15 per person • We all stick together. All or none!

  7. What to wear/bring • Wear: • Old jeans/shirts • Jackets/gloves/hats (outside races) • Cowboy/cowgirl boots? Sneakers! • Bandana • Bring: • Dedication to work hard! • Sleeping bag/pillow (we will be sleeping on mattresses) • Toiletries (towel/shampoo) • $$ (for activities) • Ipod for car ride • GPS

Depart • Sunday, March 23rd, meet at Atrium of SCE. • Meet at 7:00a.m. & depart ASAP. • Six hours from Chicago to Lexington, Kentucky • Arrive around 4:00p.m. (KY is 1 hour ahead) depending on lunch time • Settle in at the church in Lexington, Kentucky (10 miles from CKRH) • Shop for food for the week that we can make in their fully-equipped kitchen

  9. Arrival • Leave Saturday, March 29th, during lunchtime • Arrive/pick-up at the SCE atrium around dinner time • Driver needs to take van back to O’Hare (thank you!) • …tell everyone about all the fun you had volunteering with ASB!!!...

  10. Extra notes… • JFYI…CKRH requested pre-med/pre-pt/pre-nursing/pre-ot students because you will have one day at the Rehab facilities in KY. One of the biggest and best facilities in the U.S.! It is a VERY great opportunity. • Get your resumes in on time to apply for a fun-packed stress-free week of fun. OH YEAH!!!!!!!!! • This trip entails a LOT of hard work…be PREPARED to dedicate your entire week to CKRH.
