  2. What was the idea of the transformation of OAFLA? The idea was the challenge of defying the outdated stereotype of First Ladies everywhere. To break the tradition of assigning symbol and ceremony to the spouse of an African Head of State who are, for the most part, professional women in their own right. Make African First Ladies a powerful force of change and use their good offices to bring about change in the lives of millions of their people in their individual countries in particular and the African continent in particular.

  3. Build on their dedication and utilize the influences of their high office to fight poverty and gender inequality by establishing schools, clinics and other social welfare programs to help Africa’s vulnerable. On the national and continental level, conduct advocacy work to bring about policies that address the problems of women and children. Utilize the power of their collective efforts, so that they could have an even greater continent-wide impact and to be the voice of Africa’s vulnerable to the broader global community.

  4. Major accomplishments • Establishment of the permanent secretariat in Addis Ababa; • Development of manuals for finance and administration; • Creation and implementation of an organizational communication strategy; • Adoption of a new Strategic Plan • Increasing the dues collected by members; and, • Mobilization of financial resources

  5. OAFLA fundraising from various donors • $1.114 million dollars from UNAIDS, UNFPA and the Government of France. • 353,433.00 Dollars from member contributions

  6. Establishment of the Permanent Secretariat in Addis Ababa • The establishment of the secretariat was made possible through a generous contribution of the government of the Federal Democratic of Ethiopia. • The new Secretariat was equipped with furniture and office equipment through a generous donation of UNFPA and the Ethiopian government.

  7. A consultant to the Secretariat to assist in setting up the OAFLA headquarters was made possible through UNAIDS. • Office equipment and furniture were obtained through contributions from the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and UNFPA respectively

  8. Developed operating procedures and HR to ensure accountability and transparency • A financial procedure manual for the Secretariat was developed through a generous in-kind contribution by Earnest & Young to ensure accountability and transparency. • Manual is available to members to download from the OAFLA website (www.oafla.org) • Developed guidelines for human resource requirement.

  9. Development of Communication Strategy • An OAFLA communications strategy has been developed by the UNAIDS consultant to include:- • Target audience segmentation • Messaging • Guidelines for electronic and print communication • Upgrading of OAFLA website with up to date content

Adoption of a New Strategic Plan:Expanding OAFLA’s involvement to include not only HIV/AIDS but other factors that affect women and children. • Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission • Caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children • Reproductive Health • Harmful Traditional Practices • Safe Motherhood • Preventing Gender-Based Violence • Preventing Early Marriage • Educational Opportunities for Girls • Economic Empowerment

  11. Documents are ready for the handover including but not limited to the external audit report, the draft of which was presented and discussed at the last general assembly. (available for review by members)
