  1. Rhetoric SL 12.3 – Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric.

On your paper… • First and last name at the top, today’s date & period • Copy the following definition of RHETORIC: • A. the study and practice of effective communication. • B. the study of the effects of texts on audiences. • C. the art of persuasion. • D. A pejorative term for insincere eloquence intended to win points and manipulate others. • Write the word OPPORTUNITY, then skip ten lines • Write the word BEING SEXY, then skip ten lines • Write the phrase LIVING LIFE • What do these mean to you? Write a few sentences that express your thoughts on these ideas. • Turn to someone near you and discuss your thoughts on all three ideas.

To reiterate, we’ll watch it again. • This time, add some notes to what you’ve written about the ideas he talks about. • After this viewing, we will have a discussion about the ideas he puts forth and the ideas all of you have on the same subjects. • We will use the accountable discussion techniques, outlined on the back of your syllabus. Guidelines for accountable discussion You have a right to • Make a contribution to an attentive, responsive audience (look at the speaker while the speaker is speaking). • Ask questions that clarify and advance your understanding. • Be treated civilly. • Have your ideas discussed. You are OBLIGATED to • Speak, so that everyone can hear. • Speak one at a time. • Listen for understanding. • Agree or disagree (and explain why) in response to other people’s ideas. • Critique ideas, NOT people.
