The Five Messages Leaders Must Manage Article By: John Hamm Presentation By: Mike Wells
Where poor performance begins… • Usually starts with poor communication • Begins at the very top • No one asks questions (Executives) • Fear of looking dumb • Mangers MUST send correct messages • Implicitly • Explicitly
1.Organization Structure & Hierarchy • Reorganization of structure can cause fear. • Leaders need to: • Avoid causing fear • Keep thought of politics out • Focus on organizational effectiveness • Be quick, brief and direct Leader did not go about establishing hierarchy correctly
2. Financial Results • Strategy • Long Term Focus NO! : “These are the results I need; I don’t care how you get it done.” YES! : “Today’s over and tomorrow’s another day.” May 29th: “Philadelphia avoided becoming the first team in 18 years to be blanked four straight times.” (Pressofatlanticcity.com) October 3rd: Odds to win World Series 3:2
3. Leader’s Sense of Job • Roll of leader is to bring out answers in others • The boss DOES NOT have all the answers Separate your ego from your job
4. Time Management • DO NOT: Scramble against constraints • DO: Choose reasonable tasks to complete within constraints • Look at project as whole • Fear of time creates anxiety Quality Not Quantity “It was as if the cooks at Alan’s firm had made an exquisite, five-course dinner but had forgotten the wine, the tablecloth, and the flowers and had served the food cold.”
5. Corporate Culture • Make employees feel good, but not too good • EX: - Silicon Valley CEO • Feeling Good + Team Work = Positive Results • Keep employees in positive beliefs Bad Idea
What I learned…. • To be a good leader, you must: • Allow everyone to contribute • Be a part of the team • Stress importance of long run • Ask questions • EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE! Questions?
