  2. What is Illustration • Illustration is a writing structure that utilizes examples, opinion, sample, and descriptions to explain an idea. • Examples: Be Specific by Natalie Goldberg, How to Give OrdersLike a Man by Deborah Tannen, and If You Had One Day with Someone Who’s Gone by Mitch Albom

  3. Purposes of Illustration • A basic strategy of human communication • Makes writing more vivid and interesting. Without this the writing can be lifeless and difficult to read. • Explain and clarify ideas. This is the writers responsibility to provide these examples

  4. Suggestions for using Illustration as a writing strategy • 1. Planning your essay of illustration – take time to thoroughly think about your idea before you begin to write • 2. Focus on your thesis or main idea – think about ideas that will strengthen and make your main idea more clear • 3. Gather more examples than you can use – bring together as many examples as you can to start your essay off strong • 4. Choose relevant Examples – make sure your examples have a strong and important meaning in your essay • 5. Be sure your examples are representative – the story should be typical of the main point or concept

  5. Organizing your essay of illustration • 1. Sequence your examples logically- arrange your examples in order so they make sense and serve your propose well • 2. Use transitions-link your examples to the topic sentences in your paragraph so they have a clean and understandable flow

  6. Revising and editing your essay of illustration • 1. Share your work with others- feedback can help to make your essay stronger and more understandable • 2. Question your own work while revising and editing-ask yourself key questions about what you have written by re-reading your paper
