ELiTES European Community - Japan Scientist exchange program
What is ELiTES • ELiTES: ET-LCGT interferometric Telescope Exchange of Scientists • Grant for collaboration on cryogenic developments • between KAGRA and ET European 7th Framework Program Marie Curie (2012-2016) European • Europeans visit Japan to collaborate on KAGRA • Japaneses visit Europe to collaborate on ET • Lifetime 4 years
Participants • M. Beker, M. Blom, H.J. Bulten, M. Colombini, A. Conte, R. P. Croce, R. De Salvo, V. Galdi, L. Glielmo, E. Hennes, G. Hofmann, L. Iannelli, N. Kimura, J. Komma, K. Kuroda, H. Lück, E. ELiTES consists of four Working Packages • WP1: Cryogenic payload (E. Majorana) • WP2: Cryogenic mirror (R. Nawrodt) • WP3: Cooling system (K. Somiya) • WP4: Organization (M. Punturo) Initiative web page: http://www.et-gw.eu/descriptionelites
Teleconference every month • General meeting (3rd-4th Oct.) in Tokyo general meeting Web page: http://www.et-gw.eu/1stelitesgeneralmeeting
Concrete Example of ELiTES activity • Development of alternative cryogenic suspensions • Tentative breakdown: • Attenuation performance evaluation • KAGRA • Cryogenic performance evaluation • KAGRA • Finite Element Modelling • NIKHEF-Glasgow • Silicon flexure prototyping • NIKHEF • Silicon blade prototyping • NIKHEF – Roma U. • Sapphire wires and mirror attachment Ultra-sound Machining • Schiller University - Jena WP1 and WP2
Based on common interests • Development of alternative cryogenic suspensions: • Necessary for KAGRA • Necessary for Low Frequency interferometer in ET (Einstein Telescope) Xylophone
Aim of the sub-project: • Aggressively develop cryogenic suspensions • From the present strawman design • to the level of a conceptual design • and maybe to a preliminary design • over the four year lifetime of the agreement
Other activity example • Pulse tube cryocooler development • Share measurements of vibration performance • Share techniques to reduce vibrations WP4
Is ELiTES a good example? • Not yet a direct common interest item • Still Korea may generate a tangible contribution • Examples of possible working items • Baffles, Optical levers, Some input-output optics, . . . .
An example in discussion • Baffles to stop stray light • Small, critical, self contained project • ~ 10 k€ development • ~ 100 k€ production
An example in discussion • Possible multilateral collaboration with Virgo • Parallel bilateral agreement can strengthen the working collaboration • Link to Italy-Korea exchange program
What is the secret of ELiTES • The best advice is to identify early • simple and concrete deliverable contribution items
