  1. Respiratory System Samantha Campos Gabriela Gallegos Kevin Manjarrez

  2. Objective SWBAT : Learn about the Respiratory Systems major functions and be able to explain how it works with other body systems.

  3. Vocabulary Vocabulary you guys should look for: Diaphragm Epiglottis Larynx Bronchus Nasal Cavity Pharynx Trachea

  4. Major functions The major function of the respiratory system is to extract oxygen from the air and transfer it to the bloodstream. It also helps to maintain the acid base of the blood and it also ventilates the lungs.

  5. Diagram Of major parts This diagram shows some of the parts that the respiratory system includes larynx-voice box Pharynx- part behind the nose and mouth Trachea-Tube through which air passes to the lungs.

  6. Continued • Epiglottis- Flap that covers the windpipe Nasal Cavity- It is the inside of your nose, the little hairs help filter the air your breathe. Diaphragm- allows your lungs to expand so you can breathe correctly • Bronchus- Major air passage of the lungs

  7. Breathing Process When you breath in from the nasal vestibule it goes through the nasal cavity. When you breath in through your mouth it goes through the oral cavity then to the pharynx because is connected to the nose, mouth, and the esophagus. The trachea is in the middle of the throat and it leads the air to the lungs.

  8. Disease Asthma causes breathing difficulties due to inflammation of the bronchi which is a disease that causes your breathing to slow down which can cause death if the case is severe. A treatment for asthma would be an inhaler which contains corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are used to reduce the inflammation in the bronchi.

  9. Homeostasis Your Respiratory system works with your Circulatory system both of these systems help to maintain your body has good oxygen levels and that all of your organs don't have too much carbon dioxide in them.

  10. Check For Understanding • What other organ in the body does the respiratory system work with to maintain homeostasis? • How does asthma affect the respiratory system? • Where does the oxygen go?
