ISOC AP Chapter? Anthony S. Lee ISOC Taiwan Chapter
The ISOC has a strong relation with our Internet. Such the IETF, which is under the ISOC to set Internet standard. From another aspect, ISOC link the Internet elite in kind of human network. • The ISOC plays a very important role in our Internet community. • Like ICANN, the ISOC influences the Internet Policy and operation in some aspects that you can see.
Last December, the ISOC made several changes in its governance structure. One thing needs to be mentioned is the chapters can nominate candidate and vote for one board seat. • It is a good opportunity for chapters to participate more active than before.
However, this election had no candidate from Asian chapters. The result is that we missed this opportunity. • Back to the ISOC
What’s the ISOC’s Mission? To assure the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. However, no Asian candidate that can apply to its mission? I doubt.
During ISOC board election period, Asia did not have many chapters even Taiwan chapter was listed on “in formation” status. The question is that in such kind of situation how to involve in this election.
My suggestion is: • To encourage our local Internet community to build up more and more chapters. • If we have more active and well organized chapters in Asia, things will be changed.
Here, I express my some ideas about the ISOC chapter and propose the possibility to create a Forum for Asia Pacific ISOC Chapters. • First, I think the ISOC Chapter is to focus on its local Internet issues.
To build up a chapter that should have a mechanism to help local community to communicate and solve their problems. • Second, we also need a forum for our Asia Pacific ISOC chapters to joint together. Not only share different experience, but also build up a formal channel to communicate Asia Pacific chapters with ISOC.
Third, I would like to say are there any probabilities to build up such kind of forum in Asia Pacific?
A Forum for Communicating and Bridging • However, I think we should share some experiences within Asia Pacific region. • If we create a forum (could called ISOC AP Chapter), we can meet regularly to discuss and find ways to our problems.
Need a voice from AP? • Localization is the focus of ISOC proposed in the beginning. • So, should we need a AP forum under ISOC? • What’s the main purpose? • Want our voice to be heard?
So, my question is: • Should we need a forum for ISOC AP chapters? • And what’s its main purpose? • And, will our voice be heard both by other non-AP chapters and ISOC? • Should we discuss on this issue?
