  1. The Digestive System Ty Clare, Brooks Larson, TobbieZook, Austin Curren

  2. Mouth • Has teeth to break down foods • The amylase in saliva also breaks foods down • Uses the tongue push foods down the esophagus

  3. Esophagus • Lined with mucosa, a pink and slimy tissue that breaks food down. • The esophagus is 25 cm long • Delivers food into the stomach from the mouth

  4. Stomach • Digests food • Produces acid to diminish the remaining food • Also covered in mucosa • Moves remains to the small intestine

  5. Small Intestines • Absorbs proteins and nutrients from the food into the body • Has 3 sections, the duodenum, the Jejunum, and Ileum • Duodenum: Mainly for digestion and absorption • Jejunum: For absorbing carbohydrates and proteins • Ileum: Absorbs Vitamins, bile salts, and whatever the first two didn’t

  6. Large Intestines • Absorbs water from the indigestible food • Then passes useless waste material through the body • Is about 4.9 feet long • Takes about 16 hours to finish the remaining process

  7. Anus • Final part of the digestive system • Where food and substances are secreted • What comes out is the things that couldn’t be digested • The remaining substances that come out can be toxic to your body

  8. Disorders • Autoimmune Hepatitis-Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease in which the body's immune system attacks liver cells. This immune response causes inflammation of the liver • Celiac Disease-Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food • Cirrhosis-Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver slowly deteriorates and malfunctions due to chronic injury. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the flow of blood through the liver. Scarring also impairs the liver's ability to -control infections -remove bacteria and toxins from the blood -process nutrients, hormones, and drugs -make proteins that regulate blood clotting -produce bile to help absorb fats—including cholesterol—and fat-soluble vitamins

  9. Interesting Facts • You produce more than 1.7 liters of saliva each day • The liver is the largest organ in the body and performs more than 500 functions.
