  4. BERLIN CONFERENCE(1884-1885) • Meeting of 14 European countries to make decisions about dividing Africa • Established boundaries and routes for roads and railroads • King Leopold II of Belgium: Exploited human and mineral resources of the Congo Free State during 20 yrs of fighting

  5. African Resistance • Decimated the population of many African peoples • Could not keep up with military technology • Disease helped the Europeans

  6. Boer Wars (Freedom Wars) • Dutch born farmers (Boers) came into power (Spoke Afrikaans) • Boer Wars: (1880 to 1881 and 1899 to 1902) Britain and Boer Republics • Civilians in concentration camps • Later, colonies formed Union of South Africa
