  4. LOCATION • Grenada is the most southern of the Windward Islands • Situated at 120 05' N latitude and 610 40' W longitude in the southeastern part of the Caribbean Sea. • The most important of the attached Grenadines is Carriacou, which is located 25 km north of Grenada

  5. Area of Grenada • The country has a total area of 344 km2 • Grenada Island has an area of 311 km2 • Carriacou has an area of 30.7 km2 • Petit Martinique is approximately 2.3 km2 in area and lies 4 km east of Carriacou

  12. Existing Protected Area Governance Situation • The Forestry and National Parks Department (FNPD), Ministry of Agriculture govern all protected areas that are terrestrial with exception to the Lagoon Park Protected area

  13. Governance Cont. • The head of the Conservation Unit is responsible to the Chief Forestry Officer (CFO). • The CFO is responsible to the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries. • The PS is responsible to the Minister of Agriculture.

  14. Marine Protected Areas • Pertaining to marine protected areas, two areas are protected • (Mollinere Beasejour and Clarkes Bay) • Two is proposed (Grand Anse and Sandy Island). • The Fisheries Division in the Ministry of Agriculture governs these marine areas

  15. Protected Area Governance Goals • to be Grenada’s leading natural resource management institution that ensures the optimum contribution of forest to environmentally-sound, social and economic development.

  16. Desirable Changes in Protected Area Governance • Greater administrative support for Protected Area Management Initiatives • Greater Community involvement and contribution in Protected Area Management operations. • Increased awareness • Increased capacity development

  17. Desirable Changes in Protected Area Governance Cont. • Increase livelihood and income generating opportunities particularly so for rural communities. • Greater collaboration with institutional and other stakeholders. • Establish conservation club for student (primary / secondary schools)

  19. Weakness • Limited resources to manage effectively and efficiently • Uncertain about the biodiversity status

  20. Opportunities • Greater stakeholder involvement • To access financial resources for area management • For more areas to become declared • For research • For further protection by donor assistance • Sharing of information

  22. Information, Resources and Tools to Empower Stakeholders • Environmental education and awareness programs • Community meetings • Community involvement in the management of forest resources • Invo0lvement of stakeholders in the decision making process as relates to the protected areas.

  24. Possibilities of Other Governance Type • Forestry must remain the lead agency in the management / governance of the protected areas. • However stakeholders must be involved in a participatory manner on all matters / issues pertaining to the management of the areas..
