Recap on S1 and S2 • Common course in S1 and S2, with everyone taking the same subjects • English and Maths in S1 & S2 – some setting in S2 • Breadth & Depth across the curriculum in preparation for National courses • By now, clearer idea of subjects you are best at, subjects you like and (for some) subjects you need for career • Pathway Planning - Levels
Basic principles underpinning personalisation and choice • All pupils can progress in S3 then S4 • From 15 or so subjects in S2 to 9 subjects in S3 • Keeping it broad - must do English and Mathematics, then choosing 6 subjects from curricular areas and 1 from a ‘free choice’ plus PE, RME and PSE • Complete BGE at Level 3 and Level 4 in S3 and preparation for N5/4 courses • S2/3 report, Careers Evening and S3 profile will allow you to plan • Enabling presentation in many SQA subjects in S4
Making logical and appropriate choices • English and Mathematics compulsory • Modern Language is recommended for most by Scottish Executive, by HMIe and by us • Balance of subjects across curriculum areas – Social Subjects, Language, Science, Expressive Arts, Health & Wellbeing, Technologies • Free Choice column - constraints
Making logical and appropriate choices(2) • Do not choose subjects because your best friend is doing it , because you like the teacher, or because you have heard that it is an “easy” subject! • What are my best subjects just now? • Are there any new subjects I would like to try? • What subjects do I enjoy? • What subjects do I need for a career? • Keep options open!
Free Choice column • To keep balance across curriculum areas for Broad General Education • Free Choice allows for you to specialise in areas you feel you are good are or want to progress with in S4/5/6 - constraints Your courses in S4 will come from the subjects you choose in S3.
Demands of S3 and S4 • Increased quality and quantity of work expected • Regular homework • Regular topic tests requiring revision • S4 preliminary examinations for National 5 • SQA coursework to be submitted throughout S4 • National SQA qualifications in S4
Thinking beyond S4 • During S4 start focusing on possible career – Careers interview, Guidance staff, websites THINK ABOUT WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU! • Subjects choice pathways – learner journey • College courses and university courses • Job/Apprenticeship • Stay on for S5
The Mechanics of Choice • The choice form – deadline Friday 1 March 2019 THEN • Dealing with choice forms and enquiries - speak to your Head of House THEN • Timetabling issues – staffing, class numbers, senior school
S4 - moving to qualifications • English and Literacy • Mathematics and Numeracy • PSE/PE • 4 choices continuing from S3 • Majority presented at National 4 or National 5 • National 4 – internal generation of evidence, external moderation • National 5 – combination of coursework plus external assessment (this varies across subjects – there is always an examination)
