  2. Bradburn arrives Mier y Teran sends Captain Juan Bradburn to arrest those who had made new land grants (Liberty) after April 6, 1830. Bradburn • American born • Mexican citizen. • MEAN…hated

  3. Trouble at Anahuac Bradburn • renames Perry’s Point Anahuac to make the settlement feel more Mexican. • Forces settlers to stock fort • Took settlers slaves • Threw William Travis and Patrick Jack in jail without charges

  4. Texas settlers take up arms Even though legal in Mexico, settlers still felt Bradburn’s actions were wrong. William Jack spread news of his brother’s imprisonment. Settlers grabbed their rifles and started marching on Anahuac Settlers battle Bradburn’s troops; tried to negotiate for release; decided to attack garrison John Austin goes to Brazoria to find cannons.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions Rebels wrote the Turtle Bayou Resolution stating their causes for the revolt. • Bradburn had ignored the Mexican Constitution of 1824 • Putting up garrisons (military posts) • Imprisonment of citizens without cause Pledged loyalty to Constitution of 1824 and General Santa Anna FIRST ORGANIZED PROTEST AGAINST MEXICO

  6. Avoiding the crisis Colonel Piedras • travels to Anahuac • replaces Bradburn as commander • Releases Travis and Jack from prison

  7. Bloodshed at Velasco • John Austin secures cannon and travels down Brazos River • Colonel de Ugartechea orders ship to stop…settlers fire cannon on Mexican fort • Settlers on ground attacked fort • Many died on both sides • Ugartechea runs out of ammunition and surrenders
