BROADBAND COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS(404190) • TEACHING SCHEME:EXAMINATION SCHEME: • Lectures: 3 Hrs/Week Insem Exam : 30 marks • Practicals:2 Hrs/ Week Endsem Exam: 70 Marks • Regular assignments/tests/tutorials will be conducted throughout the semester as per attached schedule • Laboratory work should be submitted every following week for assessment and grading. • A visit to a Optical Fibre Communication will be planned, as a part of term work. • SUBJECT INCHARGE: Mrs. S. G Watve
COURSE OBJECTIVES • To familiarise students with the three primary components of a typical fiber-optic communication system • To introduce the concept of WDM and explain issues related to system design with special emphasis on Power Budget and Rise Time Budget. • To familiarise students with the basics of orbital mechanics and the basic satellite communication system • To explain satellite link design for up link and down link • To compareand contrast between the two broadbandcommunication systems and explain the need for their co-existence
COURSE OUTCOMES After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to: • Analysethe principle of Modal propagation of light through an Optical Fibre and Explain working principles of the key components of a typical Fibre Optic Communication system. • Estimate Power and Rise Time Budgets for a typical fibre optic link. • Explainthe basic working principle of WDM and its components and Optical Amplifiers. • DescribeKey components, various satellite subsystems and Orbital effects in Satellite Communication Systems. • Estimatesatellite link budget for up-link, down-link, and overall link and Analyse orbital mechanics, calculation of antenna look angles, C/N and G/T computations .
