This study investigates how VHT STAs should handle control response frames in non-HT frames. It explores methods for conveying channel bandwidth information and making decisions about transmitting control responses. Should the BW indication rule be updated? Yes, No, or Abstain?

BW Indication in Non-HT Frames Authors: Date: 2011-01-17 Yong Liu, Marvell
Motivation • Control response BW selection • A STA that receives a frame that elicits a control frame transmission (other than CTS frame) shall send the response frame using the same channel bandwidth as the received frame • When a VHT STA receives a non-HT PPDU (or non-HT duplicate PPDU) that elicits a control frame transmission, how does the VHT STA tell the BW of the received non-HT PPDU (or non-HT duplicate PPDU), and decide the BW of the control response transmission? Yong Liu, Marvell
Examples • RTS ⇒ CTS • BAR ⇒ BA • BAR can be transmitted by using non-HT (duplicate) PPDU for lower overhead and channel access protection • BAR receiver needs to know the BW of BAR to decide the BW of BA transmission • CF-END (from non-AP STA) ⇒ CF-END (from AP) • CF-END shall be transmitted by using non-HT (duplicate) PPDU • When AP receives a CF-END from a non-AP STA, and decides to transmit a CF-END also, it needs to know the BW of the received CF-END • Sounding Poll ⇒ Sounding Feedback • Sounding Poll can be transmitted by using non-HT (duplicate) PPDU for lower overhead and channel access protection • Sounding Poll receiver needs to know the BW of the Sounding Poll frame to decide the BW of sounding feedback transmission Yong Liu, Marvell
Pre-motion • Should the spec framework document be updated with the following BW indication rule? • A VHT STA that transmits a control frame carried in non-HT or non-HT duplicate format and addressed to a VHT STA and eliciting a control frame transmission or a sounding feedback management frame transmission shall set the INDICATED_CH_BANDWIDTH TXVECTOR parameter of the control frame to the same value as the CH_BANDWIDTH TXVECTOR parameter and shall set the Individual/Group bit in the TA field to 1. • Yes • No • Abstain Yong Liu, Marvell
