What is Sportsmanship? …a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. …losing without complaint and victory without gloating …treating others as you wish to be treated and respect others and one's self …self-control, courteous, and accepting results of one's actions …being a good citizen.

  5. Who Influences Positive Behaviors? • Parents • Teammates/Peers • Student Fans • Coaches • Athletic director • How do each of these have an effect on sportsmanship?

  6. Parents & Sportsmanship How do you develop this with parents? Parent Meetings Video’s (positive or negative) District or Athletic Department Mission Program Advertisements PA Announcements

  7. Why do parents need positive sporting behaviors? • To prevent violent actions towards officials, opponents, and other spectators. • To promote ethics, integrity, and respect in all walks of life. • To serve as proper role models for our students. Sports develop character in youth, it reveals character in adults.

  8. Parents rules and tips for creating a positive environment • Accept the outcome • Participation • No alcohol, tobacco and drugs • Ask your child • Release your child • Keep perspective

  9. Coaches Impact on Sportsmanship • Coaches are the AMBASSADORS • How they lead is what is seen as acceptable • “What you permit, you promote.” • Professional Development opportunities • Book Study/Wiki discussions • Core Beliefs • Habitudes Program • Videos (You Tube)

  10. Student Fans/Peers & Sportsmanship • Working with student leaders/captains • Develop a positive fan group • Honor a sportsmanship athlete each season • Strong expectations • Highlight weekly sportsmanship opportunities • Sportsmanship Summits/Symposiums

  11. Sports are not only who is best. It’s not just to win at all costs. If that’s all it is, if it is to win no matter what, even if you trample on your fellow competitors by cheating, by breaking ethic of sport, our society is in a lot of trouble…. • Travis Tygart - USADA
