  1. Agenda Finish Assignment (10 Minutes) Lesson: Writing a Function Rule

  2. Writing a Function Rule:

  3. Write a function rule from the table:

  4. Write a function rule from the table: Ask yourself, “What can I do to 1 to get to -1, 2 to get to 0….?

  5. Write a function rule from the table: Ask yourself, “What can I do to 1 to get to -1, 2 to get to 0….? Subtract 2 from each input value.

  6. Write a function rule from the table: Ask yourself, “What can I do to 1 to get to -1, 2 to get to 0….? Subtract 2 from each input value. So, f(x) equals x minus 2.

  7. Write a function rule from the table: Ask yourself, “What can I do to 1 to get to -1, 2 to get to 0….? Subtract 2 from each input value. So, f(x) equals x minus 2. f(x) = x – 2

  8. Write a function rule from the table: Ask yourself, “What can I do to -4 to get to -2?” to -2 to get to -1…? -4 ÷ 2 = -2 Note: dividing by 2 is the same as multiplying by ½

  9. Write a function rule from a verbal expression, and solve using the rule: • Your uncle Fred loaned you $210 to buy a lawn mower. You charge $35 to mow one lawn. Write the function rule for your profit. • Profit is equal to income minus the expense. • Profit is the dependent variable since it depends on the number of lawns you mow. • Therefore, the independent variable is the number of lawns mowed, and represents the income.

  10. Write a function rule from a verbal expression, and solve using the rule: • Your uncle Fred loaned you $210 to buy a lawn mower. You charge $35 to mow one lawn. Write the function rule for your profit. • Let’s build our equation! • m = number of lawns mowed • p(m) = profit (profit is a function of m) • Your profit equals your income minus your expenses • Profit = 35 times the number of lawns mowed minus cost of the mower. • p(m) = 35m – 210

  11. Writing a Non-Linear Function Rule • Example: Write the function rule for the area of a rectangle whose length is 5ft more than its width. What is the area of the rectangle if the width is 9ft? • Step 1: Draw a Picture of the • General case • Step 2: Draw a new picture • That shows the length is bigger. • Step 3: Use the picture to make • A function rule and solve W A L W A W + 5

  12. Writing a Non-Linear Function Rule continued… W A L W A W + 5

  13. Homework • Pg. 265-266 • # 8-11 all, 13-21 odd
