  4. Learn more about the different types of surfboards and their uses: Shortboard- Shortboards are appropriate for fast, steep waves, and range from 5-7 feet. A shortboard can have any fin setup. They are made for aggressive surfing/contest-style surfing. Shortboards are easier to duck dive in comparison to longboards, and are also easier to turn and will respond quickly in the most critical section of the wave.

  5. Longboard- A longboard is designed for ultimate stability, and is 8-11 feet long. The surfboard is easy to paddle and catch waves on- making them the ideal surfboard to learn on. There’s a great deal of style associated with riding longboards. Due to their size, it will allow you to walk up and down on the board. They are best in ankle high to waves that are just overhead. The only downside is they are difficult and slow to turn.

  6. Funboard- Funboards are between 7 and 8 feet long, and have been designed for smooth riding in a wide range of conditions. They are perfect board for first timers as they are stable and wide and work in many different waves. A funboard is basically a blend between a longboard and a shortboard that’ll let you catch more waves because of the extra volume.

  7. Fish- While the fish is a shortboard, it differs in that it has a wider, rounder nose, wide tail with a deep swallow cut into it, and a flat rocker so they paddle well. They are ideal for beginners as they have more volume and are easier to balance. The surfboard is generally under 6 feet long and works best in thigh high to overhead waves. Speed and flow is the main ride characteristic. venicebeachsurflessons.com

  8. Foamboard- As the name suggests, they are made of foam and designed specifically for newbies and younger surfers. They are much more buoyant in the water and safer, which makes them an obvious choice for surf schools.
