  1. Respiratory System

  2. Respiratory System Air sac alveoli very small air sacs; where air breathed in goes • air-filled spaces in the body

  3. Respiratory System Bronchial tubes diaphragm sheet-like muscle separating the chest from the abdominal cavity; creates suction to draw in air and expand lungs • two tubes at the end of the trachea, brings in air from trachea and helps clean lungs; one tube goes to right lung, one to left

  4. Respiratory System exhale inhale to breathe in • to breathe out

  5. Respiratory System larynx lungs two respiratory organs • voice box

  6. Respiratory System Nasal cavity pharynx throat; collects incoming air from the nose and passes air to the trachea • helps with inhaling and exhaling of air through the nose

  7. Respiratory System respiration ribs bones that protect and support the chest • inhaling and exhaling air, breathing

  8. Respiratory System sinuses windpipe windpipe; passage from pharynx to lungs • hollow spaces in the bones of the head, helps regulate temperature of air breathed in

  9. About this system… • Uses lungs to breath in (inhale) and out (exhale)

  10. Inhaling • Air enters through the nasal passage • Air travels through the throat to the trachea • The trachea divides into two tubes called the bronchial tubes • The bronchial tubes lead to the lungs • In the lungs, the bronchial tubes divide into smaller tubes called the bronchioles • At the ends of the bronchioles, there are air sacs • The diaphragm is at the bottom of the chest cavity.

  11. Exhaling • Carbon Dioxide is a waste product • Cells need to get rid of carbon dioxide • When blood cells absorb oxygen, it lets go of carbon dioxide.
