  3. MEMORIAL DAY On Memorial Day, people get together (gather) to celebrate and look back on (recall) people from their past. They remember family and friends who passed away (died) during war time or at any time for any reason. The tradition dates back to the Civil War (Decoration Day)and was celebrated about the first of May. However, in 1971, Memorial Day was officially moved to the last Monday in May. It also unofficially marks the beginning of summer vacation for many families with school-aged children.
