  1. IGCSE ART AND DESIGN 2014 Paper 2

  2. Compass logo design • Outdoor activities – you should draw people in adventurous situations – rock climbing, hang gliding, trekking, surfing etc (not regular sports, think extreme) • If you could collect first hand research – ie. Climbing club, walkers in Yangmingshan etc, that would be great. • Draw people/these activities • Research – other competitors logos, look at established companies (like North Face etc) • Analyse their logos • Research type and font • Sketch different design possibilities • Create full colour versions • Use programs such as illustrator and photoshop to make your designs look professional • Take photographs of existing stores that you will be able to use to help display your logo • Keep trying to refine and improve your design

  3. Bus advertisement • Local attractions – mind map, list them. • Visit the attractions, take photographs, first hand research, collect brochures etc. • Choose one attraction and think about how to make it as appealing as possible – your design must be appropriate – who is your target audience? • Research advertising on buses, bus stops, train stations etc. visit these places, take photos – analyse what is there already. • Look at famous solutions from around the world - analyze • Sketch solutions. • Develop these using appropriate media ( or different media and make choices) • Think about text – what will your advertising say? Just english or Chinese characters too? • Using photoshop show how your design would look in real life

  4. Some groups increase … • This is open ended – you could use this as the basis for any design brief • It could be the slogan for an ad campaign, or you could just use elements of it as inspiration. • No matter what you decide to do, you must go through the same steps as the other questions, research, photography etc.

  5. 4. Lamps. Fabric repeat pattern • Requires first hand observational drawings as a starting point. Play with the idea of light/dark. • Develop these with different media. • Photograph different lighting from around the city/shops/etc • Research pattern designs – analyse your results. • Turn your experiments into patterns (normally by simplyfying them) • Making a repeat pattern – two ways, using illustrator, and making a physical version. I think you should do both (in the exam you could) • Where will the fabric be used (look at and research fabrics in interior design) • Use photoshop to show how your design will be used in reality

  6. Insect costume design for actor • Mind map – insects. • Drawing…find high definition pictures. Draw and paint in detail. • Think about how you can adapt the body structure or the insect in imaginative ways. Draw different insects and imagine how you could transform them. • Decide on a story for your character. Perhaps the character would require a costume that can change or adapt according to the story? • Research costume/haute couture fashion – look at famous designers. Analyze • Make sure the insect that you chose is appropriate to the character • Use template s to practice drawing lots of different solutions. Develop these. • Use inks and other wet media to produce illustrations of how your work may look (the work of Stina Persson/julie verhoeven is good to demonstrate this) • Final piece should include front and back view – maybe close up details for the head dress and other accessories.

  7. 6. Travellers - clock • Mind map about travelling • Research the things from your mindmap in detail – ie. Maps, luggage, tickets, vehicles etc • Draw and experiment with some of the images you are interested in • Go to taipei main station – what clocks do they have?- analyze. Imagine your clock in the same space. • Research clock designs – these don’t necessarily have to be in train stations. • Think about the elements of the clock, the hands, numbers etc – how could these be adapted into a design? • Develop your drawings, try out different media. • How will your clock look like in reality? Use photoshop to help you show this.

  8. 7. Traditional dance, mosaic • Mind map – list types of dance • Research the type of dance – this will involve cultural research – understand the traditions! • You will have to try and capture the unique feeling of your cultures dance – how do they move? How can you show this? • Look at artists from your chosen culture – use these to help you. • Research mosaics. Analyse. • How will you adapt your drawings and paintings into the mosaic form, can you use the mosaic technique to enhance your design? • Visit a theatre take photographs • Look at exsiting murals and mosaics in public spaces. Analyse • Make a mosaic! ( how will you do this?) • Use Photoshop to show how your design will look in real life

  9. 8 - waterpark • Mindmap – wildlife ( it’s a water park, so animals connected to water are probably appropriate) • Visual research on chosen wildlife – drawings and paintings based on this. • Who is your target audience? (kids and families) what kind of ‘look’ would be appropriate? • Visit the waterpark, take photos • Research theme parks from around the world, look at the water features they employ, analyse them. • Turn your sketches into plans ….how could the wildlife interact – for example , would you have a fountain coming out of the back of a whale? Be as imaginative as possible! • How big/tall/wide will your feature be? Will customers be able to interact with it? What issues will this raise? • Use photoshop to see how your final design may look in real life

  10. 9 – local flora and fauna/ jewellry • Mind map – all the local ( to taiwan) plants and animals – there are LOTS in yangmingshan! • You will be able to draw some things from real life, others ( snakes/spiders for example) you can find images of in books/online. • Good quality studies are essential – pick appropriate media – how could you adapt these drawings (enlarge? Stretch? Take elements of?) • Research your chosen area (shoes, bags , jewellry etc) analyse • Who is your customer? • Research existing designers ( there will be famous designers for each of these categories. Analyse. • Develop your designs – what materials will you use? • Make small mock ups • Provide examples of material (swatches) • Show how your work would look on a model of some sort (could be close up, could be full size or both)
