Tuning Educational Structures in Europe “The name TUNING was chosen for the project to reflect the idea that universities do not look for uniformity in their degree programs of any sort of unified, prescriptive or definitive European curricula but simply for points of reference, convergence and common understanding”.

4. TUNING Project “The protection of the rich diversity of European Education has been paramount in the Tuning Project from the very start and the project in no way seeks to restrict the independence of academic and subject specialists, or undermine local and national academic authority”.

5. TUNING Project “TUNING is a university driven project which aims to offer a concrete approach to implement the Bologna Process at the level of Higher Education Institutions and subject areas”.

6. TUNING Project “The Tuning approach consists of a methodology to (re-) design, develop, implement and evaluate study programs for each of the Bologna cycles. It can be considered valid worldwide, since it has been tested in several continents and found fruitful”.

14. TUNING Lines • The TUNING lines (e.g. ECTS, based on student workload) can be adapted to European Educational Programmes, such as Erasmus Thematic Networks, Erasmus Mundus and External Cooperation Windows.

Erasmus Mundus Objectives Erasmus Mundus (covering the period 2004-2008) is the EU co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. The Erasmus Mundus programme’s overall aim is to enhance the quality of European higher education by fostering co-operation with third countries in order to improve the development of human resources and to promote dialogue and understanding between peoples and cultures.

16. Erasmus Mundus The programme's specific objectives are to: • Select high-quality integrated masters courses which are offered by a consortium of at least three higher education institutions in at least three participating countries (Action 1); • Give scholarships to highly qualified graduate students and scholars from third countries to follow or participate in the selected masters courses (Action 2);

Erasmus Mundus • Select high-quality partnerships between selected masters courses and third-country higher education institutions (Action 3); • Select projects of at least three institutions in at least three participating countries aiming to improve accessibility and enhance the profile and visibility of higher education in the European Union (Action 4).

20. External Cooperation Windows Overview of the Action • The Erasmus Mundus ECW is a co-operation and mobility scheme in the area of higher education co-operation launched by Europe Aid cooperation Office and implemented by the Executive Agency Education, Audiovisual and Culture.

External Cooperation Windows • The Erasmus Mundus External Co-operation Window (EM ECW) objective is to achieve better understanding and mutual enrichment between the European Union and third countries co-operation in the field of higher education through promoting the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level. This will be achieved through the promotion of partnerships and institutional co-operation exchanges between European Higher Education Institutions and Third Country institutions and a mobility scheme addressing student and academic exchanges.

External Cooperation Windows More specifically, the EM ECW aims: • To enhance the international co-operation capacity of universities in third countries; • To promote co-operation between sending and hosting institutions; • To enable students to benefit linguistically, culturally and educationally from the experience of pursuing academic studies in another country, and to promote EU values;

External Cooperation Windows • To improve the transparency and recognition of studies and qualifications, in particular building on the "acquis" and achievements gained of the Bologna process in this area; • To provide good students from vulnerable groups with higher education; • To enhance the skills and qualifications of foreign higher education staff so that they can contribute actively towards improvement of quality;

External Cooperation Windows • To build the capacity of the administration and public and private sector by participation of their staff in higher education mobility activities (especially through doctorate and post-doctorate activities); • To enhance in the medium term the political, cultural, educational and economical links between the European Union and Third-countries.
