  2. Respiration (REHS puh RAY shuhn) is the way human beings get and use oxygen they need to live. The body needs oxygen to make energy. Respiration also involves getting rid of Carbon Dioxide. Carbon Dioxide and water vapor are waste materials.

  3. Carbon Dioxideis a gas that is made when human beings (and other living things) use oxygen. Only about 0.03% of the air you breathe in is Carbon Dioxide! Each lung has MILLIONS of small air chambers called alveoli (Al vie oh lie). Air or oxygen needs to go through your Pharynx, Larynx, and Trachea before it can enter the lungs.

  4. In an adult, each lung is about 10 to 12 inches long (5/6 of 1 foot-1 foot). A structure called the Mediastinum separates your right lung from your left lung. This involves the heart, Trachea, Esophagus, and blood vessels. Some common lung diseases are Black Lung, Asthma, and Pneumonia.

  5. When you inhale, the oxygen passes down your Pharynx, Larynx and Trachea and into your lungs. When you exhale, Carbon Dioxide goes up your Trachea and Esophagus and past your Epiglottis and out of your body. Muscles and ribs protect your lungs from getting damaged. If you’re playing or running, instead of 20, you might breathe 80 times per minute (1,400 times per hour)!

  6. The Larynx, Pharynx, Trachea, nose, mouth, Diaphragm, Main stem Bronchi, lungs, Alveoli (small air chambers in lungs), Bronchial tube, and Bronchioles are all very important parts of the Respiratory System. When your Diaphragm gets smaller, your lungs expand and you inhale or take a breath. When your Diaphragm expands, your lungs let out Carbon Dioxide but keep some Oxygen inside and lets some out. This is what allows you to hold your breath underwater.
