In this presentation by Tammy Boehme from Las Plumas High School, we explore the journey of incorporating web design into teaching calculus and the outcomes of the CTAP 295 initiative. Through a "field trip" to Willows, Tammy reflects on her experiences meeting new people, the challenges of lesson design, and the successes of her students. She shares insights on improving web resources and the positive impact of technology on student learning. Despite some shortcomings in lesson delivery, the overall feedback was encouraging, leading to valuable revisions and continued support for standards-based curriculum.

Calculus Slope of the Curve CTAP 295 Presentation By Tammy Boehme Las Plumas High School
Experiences Meet new people Enjoy my “field trip” to Willows Accomplishments Survive Design a web page Find better web resources Expectations
Experiences I met really nice teachers from Willows I’m getting older—suffered from tired tush and eye strain Accomplishments I survived, but not without wear and tear Learned web design Found great web resources Learning
Lesson Shortcomings • Web page design needed improvement • Lesson may need to be reduced to 3 days
Lesson Successes • Students worked through lesson with little teacher assistance • All students were successful
Lesson Results Variations in data were insignificant. Males did slightly better on the quiz (out of 10 points). Females did slightly better at the end of the lesson (out of 6 points)
Revisions? • Great results! • Students were positive about the animations and instant feedback on problems • No need to revise the content of the lesson
Web Page Design?Needed Some Work • Gave each day it’s own page instead of one activities page • Removed objectives that were repetitive • Fixed bad links
Has CTAP 295 Changed My Views?NO! • I was already a supporter of Standards Based Curriculum • I was already a believer in the power of technology to enhance student learning and performance
What Have I Gained? • I can design a web page—who knew? • I can find great new resources on the Internet • I can share all the above with my students
