  1. Internet Data Communications Speed Testing Marco J. Luzuriaga Marni McSween-Farmer Ross J Ryan Annemarie Yoos

  2. Internet Speeds • Internet Speeds vary depending on the type of connection • The transmission line types range from telephone to Satellite • Internet speeds starts from a minimum of 56 Kbps to 40 Gbps or more.

  3. Transmission Line Types, Uses and Speeds Figure 611, Pg. 200: Kroenke, Using MIS

  4. Testing Internet Data Communications Speeds • There are multiple sites for you to test your internet speed and compare it against the speeds given in the Figure 6-11 on page 611 of the text. • Here are a few speed testing sites: • www.speakeasy.net/speedtest • www.bandwithplace.com • www.myspeedvisualware.com • www.ookla.com • www.internetfrog.com

  5. How Does Kean Compare? • Using the Speakeasy site, Kean’s upload and download speeds were tested against servers in Atlanta, GA, Seattle, WA and New York, NY. • Here are the results:

  6. Speakeasy Test Comparison • Marni completed the Speakeasy test for her home cable modem internet connection. Again, upload and download speeds were tested against servers in Atlanta, GA, Seattle, WA and New York, NY. • Here are the results:

  7. What About Other Locations? Marni tested the connection speed for her Internet Service Provider, Optimum Online**. The results show a download speed of 9.398 Mbps and an upload speed of 2.1136. Compared to figure 6-11, the download speed is 0.602 Mbps below the maximum of 10 Mbps. The upload speed difference is 0.446 Mbps below the maximum of 2.56 Mbps. **Optimum’s user-only speed-test is located at http://speed1.optimum.net.

  8. Location Comparison Using Different Test Sites • Using Marni’s home location, additional tests were completed to compare the suggested test sites:

  9. Conclusion • There were large differences between the communication download speeds for Kean and Marni. Kean’s speeds were slower. There was not a large difference between the upload speeds. Marni also achieve faster speeds by using a laptop with Windows 7, an i7 processor and 6.0 GB of RAM. With upgrades, Kean will gain faster communication speeds. • The Speakeasy tests showed that the closer the location, the better the upload and download speeds. • The location comparison sites all tested lower than the site provided by Optimum Online. However, based on Figure 6-11, the service is performing as expected.

  10. Tips to Improve Connection Speed • Make sure that you connect to your modem using a RJ-45 Ethernet cable and not a USB cable • Check the signal strength on your router. Routers using older protocols like 802.11b and 802.11g have speeds limited to 11 Mbps and 54 Mbps. However with the 802.11n protocol speeds can go up to 150 Mbps. Information on different routers can also be found by going to www.netgear.com or www.tigerdirect.com

  11. Additional Tips • A buying guide for routers can be found at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2347539,00.asp • Upgrade your operating system • Increase the RAM (physical memory) on your computer
