Mission statement The Mission of the International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) is: • to co-ordinate research and development work in sheet metal forming, • to bring together scientists, researchers and industrialistsworking on these fields all over the World, • to provide open and scientifically highly acknowledged forum to its members • to present their research and development findings on all aspects ofsheet metal forming and certain related subjects.The combination of technical presentations and opportunities for discussion are meant to provide new works that stimulates thinking and provides valueable interchange of ideas.

  3. Biennial Congress • Since the foundation of the IDDRG in 1958 until 2002, IDDRG organized a Biennial Congress, which was open to all. This was a conventional open meeting, with wide publicity - call for papers, refereeing, poster sessions, technical visits, ladies' programme. • In 2003, the organisation of IDDRG was restructured. Since then, instead of Biennial Congresses and Working Group Meetings an Annual Conference is organised. This is reflected in the name of the events, too: the Biennial Congresses were numbered from the 1st Biennial Congress held in Paris in 1960 until the 22nd Biennial Congress held in Nagoya in 2002. The new Annual Conferences started in Bled in 2003 are denoted as IDDRG'2003, IDDRG'2004, etc.

Working Groups • The IDDRG formerly was structured into three working groups according to the three main areas of interests: • Working Group 1 (WG1) dealing with Sheet Metal Forming Processes • Working Group 2 (WG2) dealing with both sheet and tool materials • Working Group 3 (WG3) dealing with the various testing methods. • Processes covered primarily the sheet metal forming processes, machinery and press-tools, plus studies concerning behaviour at the interface between the tools and the sheet metal - wear, topography, friction, lubrication, temperature. Mathematical simulation and modelling of sheet forming processes is also included in this group. • Materials and the Testing which are imposed on them to study their suitability for press-forming are covered in the other two groups. • Each working group had a Convenor, who led the meetings and proposed and discussed themes for future action. The Working Groups met together in a member country, annually; the meeting was organised by the National Group in the country. Contributions were allocated to one of the three working groups.

  6. Working Group Meetings • Since the foundation of IDDRG (in 1958), Working Group Meetings were held annually. For the annual Working Group meetings, the Secretary General informed the National Secretaries of the date and venue, as well as of the themes for Working Groups 1, 2 and 3. The National Secretaries then gave this information to their National Groups.Those wishing to contribute to the meeting sent an abstract to their National Secretary who, if it was approved, was sent to the Secretary General, who gathered all the abstracts together before meeting with the appropriate three Convenors. If the abstract was accepted by the Convenors, they informed the authors and asked for the full contribution. Then, 35 copies of the full contribution, 3 sheets double-sided maximum, were sent to the Secretary General at least 8 weeks prior to the meeting. The Secretary-General combined all contributions for all Working Groups and despatched them to the National Secretaries for copying and circulation to their selected delegate and advisors. Copies were also sent to the Executive Committee.For the Working Group meetings, each member country or group of countries of the IDDRG was allowed 1 delegate and 2 technical advisors to each of the 3 Working Groups who could contribute freely to the discussions. Observers were allowed to attend at the discretion of the organizers.

Present state of the IDDRG • In the recent years, there were several discussions on renewing the organisation and streamlining the activity of IDDRG to meet the requirements of latest developments in sheet metal forming. As a result of these efforts, the Executive Committee of the IDDRG has decided significant changes: the former WG meetings and Congresses are united in a yearly Conference series. • The Conference is organised by one of the member countries of IDDRG. The date and venue is determined two-three years in advance. The main topics of the conferences are defined one year before the forthcoming event by the EC. Following the first Call for Papers usually a one page abstract should be submitted to the host organisers. Abstracts are reviewed by the Program Committee including members of the Executive Committee and certain members of the Local Organising Committee. Authors are notified about the acceptance of their papers and 6-10 pages full papers should be sent for the given deadline to be published in the Conference Proceedings. • This new system was first tested during the Bled Conference in 2003. Since it was a great success, it was confirmed and made as a general rule for the future.

  10. Executive Committee • The IDDRG Executive Committee is the operative governing body of the International Deep-drawing Research Group.The Executive Committee is headed by the President. The work of the President is supported by Vice-Presidents who are nominated to represent the main geographical regions of the World and in some cases Vice-Presidents are nominated to control special tasks within the IDDRG. One of the Vice-Presidents works as the Treasurer of the IDDRG. The work of the Executive Committee is coordinated by the Secretary General.The Executive Committee usually meets 2-3 times a year. During these meetings, the EC discusses relevant issues of IDDRG, deals with actual research topics and proposals. decides about the date, venue and topics of forthcoming meetings and Conferences.

  11. Membership • Membership of IDDRG is by country or group of countries: there is no individual membership. The responsibility for communication and dissemination of information is placed with the National Secretary, who is generally a member of an institute, a university or a company involved in sheet metal research, production or utilisation.Currently there are 20 National Secretaries, covering 27 member countries, since some countries have grouped together for administrative convenience, such as: • Benelux Deep-drawing Research Group - BDDRG involving Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg, • Scandinavian Deep-drawing Research Group - SDDRG involving Sweden, Norway and Finland, • North-American Deep-drawing Research Group - NADDRG involving the USA and Canada. • To join IDDRG, contact: • Mr. N.A.J.   14. IDDRG Conferences • Conferences are held each year and scheduled for May or June in one of the IDDRG member countries (in Europe, North America or Asia). However, given that most of the member countries are in Europe, most conferences are held in Europe. The regular schedule of Conferences spread-over from Sunday evening to Wednesday afternoon.  Conferences usually start with a Welcome Party on Sunday evening and continued with technical sessions lasting for two and a half days. It is also common to have technical visits to sheet metal companies, research institutes, university labs or other interests of related issues. Various social events are also scheduled in association with the conference.Prior to the conference, the Executive Committee of the IDDRG selects a series of topics that are of current interest. This selection of topic provides focus that enhances the exchange of technical information and ideas.  A scientific committee reviews papers to ensure quality and to prevent commercial papers from being included. Paper proceedings are distributed to all attendees at the start of the Conference. The duration of lectures is generally twenty minutes, in order to allow exposing the subject in details, and a generous time of ten minutes is allocated to discussions (which are strongly encouraged).The Conferences are organised so that participants have ample time and opportunity to meet their peer from other countries.The offficial language of Conferences is English.
