  2. 2013 AP BROCHURE • An introduction and rationale to the program • AP Curriculum Guide • Data points demonstrating the superlative nature of our program • A strong marketing tool for families that are new to our district or considering Open Enrollment

  3. What are the PLC Goals of the MHS AP Program? • Engage all college bound graduates in at least one successful AP experience • Maintain current course offerings • Offer College Board sponsored professional development activities to current and potential AP instructors • Continue public education regarding the success and value of our AP program

  4. 2013 AP TESTING IN REVIEW 449 Students took 1073 exams in 27 subjects 111 freshman 103 soph0mores 97 juniors 138 seniors Mean Score on all exams taken=3.22

  5. The College Success Dilemna THE RELUCTANT COHORT • 62-65% of MHS Seniors declare an intent to pursue a four year degree after graduation • There is a cohort of these students who resist engagement in rigorous coursework (such a AP classes) that will help them achieve success in college • Research shows a strong link between rigorous high school coursework and college success/graduation rates • If we can engage this cohort in AP coursework, we can give them the best chance for success in college

  6. AP is taxpayer friendly! • The College Board returns a small percentage of each test fee back to local high schools to help them cover program costs. • AP Teachers receive no additional compensation for teaching college-level courses. • Students (and parents) are saving thousands of dollars in college costs and gaining significant flexibility in their college curriculums

  7. AP Credits earned at UW Madison by the MHS Class of ‘2012 • 13 Students admitted to UW Madison submitted AP scores and earned 535 credit hours. • Current cost per credit at UW Madison is $484 • 484 X 535 = $258,940 in saved tuition for these 13 students • The resulting space in these students schedules leaves room for early graduation and matriculation to graduate school, double majors, minors or a semester abroad.

  8. 2013 AP SCHOLAR NEWS RELEASE AP Scholar designation measures the extent to which your students are engaging in AP coursework at a high level Scholar rate is 20% globally, 40% for MHS Table illustrates superlative growth in AP Scholar designation for the past 12 years in all scholar categories Growth occurred in spite of an enrollment decline of 223 Generating 12 State Scholars is an incredible achievement for our program

  9. AP State Scholars Wall of Fame

  10. Future Challenges for the AP Program • Support for the “Reluctant Cohort” • These students will require more remediation and skill development • Large class will make supporting this cohort more challenging • Students who attempt AP courses but decide they are not ready will continue to need a scheduling safety net at the regulars level • Staff Turnover/Retirements • Development of a qualified AP Instructor takes 2-5 years • Planning transitions in advance will minimize program impact
