  1. The Old Kingdom Pharaohs lived with their families in great palaces. Pharaoh means “great house” He was an all powerful ruler who’s rules had to be obeyed without question.

  2. Why did the Egyptians serve the Pharaoh? • Unity of the kingdom depended on a strong leader. • They thought the Pharaoh was the son of “Re” • Re was the sun God.

  3. The Pharaoh in public • People played music on flutes and cymbals. • People bowed down to him and put their heads to the ground along the streets.

  4. Egyptians and their Pharaoh • They thought he was GOD on earth. • As a ritual he would ride a sacred bull around the capital city of Memphis, this was suppose to keep the soil fertile. • HE was the 1st to cut ripe grain. They believed this would bring a good harvest.

  5. Deities • Deities are god or goddesses • Egyptians were polytheists, meaning they believed in more than one GOD

  6. Egyptian Gods • Re The Sun God. • HAPI: was a the God of the Nile River. • ISIS: most important goddess, she represented the loyal wife and mother.

  7. Life after Death • The Book of the Dead: it was a collection of spells and prayers that Egyptians studied. • They believed Osiris would meet the new comers at the entrance to the next world. • If they knew the spells and lived Good he would give them life after death.

  8. Embalming or mummifying steps • 1. Remove the organs • 2. Salt the body • 3. Fill the body with spices, perfumes, and then sewed up. • 4. clean body with oils • 5. body is wrapped or mummified.

  9. Egyptians learn about the human body • Egyptian Dr’s used herbs and drugs to treat illnesses. • Grew skilled at sewing up cuts and setting broken bones • They wrote the world’s first medical book on scrolls of PAPYRUS

  10. PYRAMIDS • Were the burial places for pharaohs. This huge stone building protected them from floods, animals, and grave robbers.

  11. What was inside of the pyramid • Things the pharaoh needed for in the spirit world. • Clothing, furniture, jewelry, food.

  12. How were the pyramids built? • Took thousands of years by people. • Most of the work was done by the farmers during the Nile flood.

  13. Building a pyramid • The entrance faced north, to do this the Egyptians studied the heavenly bodies. • They created a 365 day calendar with 12 months • They created a written number system based on 10 • They created fractions • Workers used wooden sleds to drag the huge blocks of rock.

  14. THE GREAT PYRAMID • This pyramid was built for King Kufu • It is one of the 3 still standing in GIZA on the west of the Nile river. • 500 ft tall and is as long as 9 football fields. • Contains 2 million stone bricks • Was the tallest structure for over 4000 years.
