  1. Location-aware Computing By Bonam Kim

  2. Outline • Introduction • Motivation • Location Determination Techniques • Location-aware Services • Example for Implementation • Conclusion

  3. 1.Introduction • A key aspect for the mobility of these applications is given by the ability to determine the user’s location. • Location-aware services allow to offer value-added service to the user, depending on their current geographic position.

  4. 2.Motivation • Location-aware services are becoming a key feature to provide tailor-made applications in wireless networks • Due to new and improved features of mobile devices and applications, the mobile markets in the past few years have seen a remarkable boom • Mobile application will continue to form an important and expanding industry in the future.

  5. 3.Location determination techniques • Pioneering work • Current techniques

  6. Pioneering work (Location determination continue) • Active Badge 1. designed and prototyped between 1989 and 1992. 2. The first location-based application in computer science literature • PARCTab 1. development since 1992 2. the first location-based applications on a PDA- class device

  7. 1. Active Badge (Location determination continue) The third, current version With a 48 bit code, bi-directional capabilities On-board 87C751 microprocessor The first version With a unique five bit code The second version With a ten bit code

  8. 2. PARKTab (Location determination continue) • Xerox PARCTab, the first content-aware personal digital assistant

  9. Current Techniques • E911 • GPS • Short-range radio

  10. E911 • Selective Routing (SR) Routes 911 emergency calls to the proper Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) based on the emergency service number assigned to the caller’s address. • Automatic Number Identification (ANI) Provides the calling party’s seven digit telephone number on the display at the PSAP. • Automatic Location Identification (ALI) Provides the name and address associated with the calling party’s telephone number on the display at the PSAP.

  11. E911 (Enhanced 911) The Belmont County, Ohio, Enhanced 9-1-1 Communications Center

  12. GPS (Global Positioning System) • The most popular option of obtaining location information today. • GPS lets suitably equipped receivers determine their position within 10 meters. • It is generally not workable indoors.

  13. GPS The Casio Pathfinder GPS watch Trimble GeoExplorer II

  14. Short-range radio • Bluetooth location-based services • Bluetooth is a specification for a small-form factor, low-cost radio solution providing links between mobile computers, mobile phones and other portable handheld devices, and connectivity to the internet.

  15. Bluetooth short-range radio Ericsson’s R520M Bluetooth-enabled cell phone

  16. Wireless GPS/Bluetooth Receiver for Mobile Terminals The world’s first integrated Bluetooth wireless and GPS receiver one for mobile devices

  17. 4.Location-aware Services • DealFinder • comMotion • GITTCS

  18. DealFinder: Mobil Shopping Guide • A position-aware shopping application for mobile devices • Share information about product prices and availability • For instance a person comparison-shopping for television sets at different local electronic stores can use DealFinder to “upload” prices to our public database. Other shoppers who will are looking for a similar television set will be able to find prices on TV sets, based on their location.

  19. comMotion • comMotion gradually learns about the location in its user’s daily life based on travel patterns. • GPS position sensing • Map display and graphical user interface • comMotion can provide maps showing the user’s current position together with neighbourhood lacales such as banks, movie theatres or grocery stores.

  20. GITCS (Ground Intermodal Traffic control system) • Apply it to the Huntsville intermodal terminal • Based on real time vehicle positioning system using GPS • Server/client system • Wireless LAN

  21. GPS Receiver Message Tool Digital Map Digital Map Message Tool Real time GPS data GPS Positioning data Communication Real Time GPS Integrated Server System Real Time GPS Integrated Client System Recorded Data Real Time Display Real Time Replay Real Time Display Real Time Replay GITCS System Architecture

  22. GITCS Implementation WLAN

  23. 5.Conclusion • This presentation provides a comparison of the technologies underlying most of the location-aware computer systems in use today.
