  1. Chaperones Expectations and Responsibilities

  2. Mandated Reporters • Educators are mandated reporters and are legally required to ensure a report is made when abuse is observed or suspected. • School volunteers, while not mandated reporters, are encouraged to report any suspected cases of abuse and neglect. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ss/ap/childabusereportingguide.asp

  3. Child Abuse Can Be Any of the Following: • A physical injury inflicted on a child by another person other than by accidental means. • The sexual abuse, assault, or exploitation of a child. • The negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a person responsible for the child’s welfare under circumstances indicating harm or threatened harm to the child’s health or welfare. This is whether the harm or threatened harm is from acts or omissions on the part of the responsible person. • The willful harming or endangerment of the person or health of a child, any cruel or inhumane corporal punishment or any injury resulting in a traumatic condition. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ss/ap/childabusereportingguide.asp

  4. Expectations • Arrive on time to the specified locations. Expected arrival time and location will be provided to you by the teacher(s). • Monitor the welfare of all within your assigned group. • All students have equal opportunity to participate. • Students are treating one another with respect. • Ensure that students are representing SJVA honorably • Students are treating the facility and host with respect. • Students are treating the general public with respect.

  5. Expectations • Communication • Clear and timely communication with SJVA teachers to address ideas, concerns, or offer suggestions. • When you meet with the lead teacher, they will cover expectations and requirements for the specific field trip you will be attending.

  6. Student Incidents • Student Behavior • A chaperone is expected to verbally redirect and help correct any and all misbehaving students, but chaperones are not required to provide any type of consequence or disciplinary action. • If a student is not responding to simple verbal commands, the chaperone must contact a teacher as soon as possible. The teacher will follow the appropriate procedures to address the student behavior. • Illness or Injury • If a student becomes ill or is injured, the chaperone must help ensure the student’s safety and contact a teacher immediately.

  7. Thank You! • Thank you for volunteering and reviewing the chaperone expectation and responsibility presentation.
