Agricultural Society in 1861 Entered the Civil War in September 1861

Major Haworth Enters Indian Service Indian Agent for the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache tribes (about 6000 people) from 1 April 1873 until 1 April 1878 Indian Agents addressed by the rank and title of Major Called “Simpoquodle” by the Kiowa in recognition of his “Red Beard” “When one time they visited him with plans laid to take his life, they went away and told that, ‘Agent’s medicine was too strong for them’”

  11. Superintendent Haworth Had 81 boarding schools, 76 day schools and 6 industrial schools under his purview, during which time Haskell & Chilocco industrial schools, and five regular schools, including Phoenix & Albuquerque, were constructed

  13. THE GRAVE JAMES M. HAWORTH.--Superintendent of Indian Schools, died suddenly in Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 12th, 1885, in his 53rd year.Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Olathe, Kansas, March 16, at 1 o'clock P.M., under the direction of the I.O.O.F. and A.F. & A.M., and were largely attended. The deceased was one of the most highly esteemed men in Johnson county, and his sudden taking off is mourned by all.

  14. Major Haworth’s Legacy Daughter- Louise C. Haworth Pilcher was a teacher in the Indian Service in a number of places including Haskell Institute, Chilocco Institute, Uintah, Cheyenne, Santa Fe, and Laguna Indian Schools (1890-1914)

  15. Major Haworth’s Legacy Grandson - Bruce Haworth Pilcher worked in the Indian Irrigation Service, Dept. of the Interior, Blackrock, NM, from (1908-1920) on the Zuni Indian Reservation. He did survey work and supervised Indian labor constructing an extensive irrigation system, including a rock dam. After construction, he supervised operation and maintenance of the irrigation system.

  16. Major Haworth’s Legacy Great Grandson Robert Bruce Pilcher worked as an architect with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Branch of Plant Design and Construction, Albuquerque (1958-84). He worked on numerous school and hospital projects around the country, including Barrow Hospital at Point Barrow, Alaska. Return to Agenda
