  1. Do Now On a half sheet of paper please answer the following questions: • What are two opinions held by the people who currently live in Pilsen? • How has Pilsen changed from 1992 – 2013 • Who does the article say may be to blame for the gentrification of Pilsen? • Whose opinion from the article do you agree with the most and why? (a number of citizens were interviewed, each has a different view of what has happened)

  2. Pilsen’s changes 1990-2000 : How and where Pilsen has changed

  3. What we do know • Eastern Pilsen has seen the biggest changes in terms of home ownership among residents as well as resident median income. • Income in 2000 was 34% higher in east Pilsen as compared to the rest of the neighborhood. • Individuals in Western Pilsen are seeing changes in the number of individuals living in a space. (i.e. families are doubling up, more than 1 person/bedroom)

  4. What makes looking at gentrification difficult • Residents stay as long as they can, so they may be in the neighborhood still, but are sharing space with others/families double up • It takes time to look at changes in housing markets, and census and data is not collected on a regular basis • While we look for changes in rent and median income it is hard to prove that long-time residents are being pushed out BECAUSE of gentrification

  5. Let’s look at the data • We are going to break down and analyze some of the graphs from the reading. • While you are looking at them, think about the claims being made by individuals citing gentrifications effects on residents and what the data is showing us.

  6. East Pilsen East Pilsen: 3105 3104 3103 3102 3101

  7. East Pilsen What is this chart telling us? Do you think it confirms, disproves or is unclear on if gentrification is happening? *justify your response.

  10. East Pilsen What is this chart telling us? Do you think it confirms, disproves or is unclear on if gentrification is happening? *justify your response. Housing is considered affordable if the resident is not paying more than 30% of their income This percentage overall is still lower than the rest of Chicago

  11. Discussion Based on everything we have looked at in class, articles and discussions, prepare a statement in response to the following question and at least two facts or observations that back up your viewpoint. Do you believe that gentrification is a negative or a positive process that occurs within a city? Why do you feel this way? *Address whether you believe this is something that is normal to occur within an urban center.
