  1. Gulf Breeze High School Academy for Health and Medical Professions

What are Medical Academies? • Designed for students wishing to pursue careers in the medical/health field. • Students explore the dynamic health care industry in classroom, lab, & clinical experiences. • Students take specific “tracking” courses to prepare for college or post high school employment. • Job shadowing, projects, guest speakers, & field trips enhance these programs.

  3. Program Sequence • This is a 4 yr program. Once selected, students will take 3 courses • 25 incoming freshmen will be selected and will take Medical Skills & Services

  4. Sophomore year, they will take - Health Science I/Anat & Phys • Junior year, they will take - Health Science II • Senior year, they will take – Nursing Assistant 3 and/or directed study, and clinical rotations • Allied Health & Pharmacy Tech rotations may also be in place • Students may also take dual enrollment courses at PSC

  5. Certified Nursing Assistant • This course prepares students for employment in a health care facility upon graduation • It requires a minimum of 40 clinical experiences in the health care field with 20 of these in a licensed nursing home. • Upon completion, students will be eligible to take the national nursing assistant examination (CNA) for certification

  6. Selection Criteria for Academy • Minimum 3.0 GPA in 8th grade core classes • Have at least a level 3 on FCAT Reading • Complete and return the application packet by deadline - May 12, 2014 (in guidance office or online) • Have a genuine interest in the health-care field • Make a commitment to participate in hospital clinicals and complete the program

  7. Be a highly motivated, independent, reliable student • Have excellent attendance and conduct • Provide proof of immunizations • Become a HOSA member and participate fully in all HOSA activities • Pay expenses associated with HOSA (such as dues and competitions) and purchase scrubs

  8. Health Occupations of America (HOSA) • This is a student organization that promotes career opportunities in health care • There will be leadership conferences and competitions in fall and spring • Competitions include district, state, and national levels

  9. Your application will include • 1. Student information • 2. Parent information • 3. Participation intent form • 4. Goal statement • 5. Immunization record • 6. 3rd nine weeks report card • 7. Three teacher recommendations

  10. Students accepted into the academy • Will maintain excellent grades and attendance • Receive no referrals • Sign a contract • Participate in HOSA including fundraisers
