  1. High School Health and Medical Sciences Academy at Lakeland High School A STEM Proposal

Purpose The U.S. Department of Labor expects health care will generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry.  The Health & Medical Sciences Academy at Lakeland will: • Promote awareness of the wide variety of occupations in health and the medical sciences • Create students that are workforce ready in the field of health and medical sciences

  3. Mission The High School Health and Medical Sciences Academy provides a rigorous academic environment in which students prepare for 21st century careers and professions in the Health and Medical Sciences.

  4. Objectives • Provide an academically challenging environment in which students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, value diversity, and engage in the pursuit of lifelong learning and academic achievement. • Provide a curriculum centered in the advanced math and science topics required for higher education in the fields of health care and medicine.

  5. Objectives • Provide corresponding CTE programs that enable students to attain the academic and vocational knowledge and skills for immediate employment in health care upon high school graduation. • Provide opportunities for students to learn the fundamentals of scientific research through meaningful participation in investigative studies and independent projects.

  6. Objectives • Develop partnerships with private and public health care professionals and facilities for the placement of students as interns in clinical and research programs and provide opportunities for job shadowing, volunteer service, and mentoring.

  7. Enrollment • Fifth Grade assessment is administered to determine interest • Application Process • Initial Cohort of 20 students • Total enrollment 80 students

  8. Course of Study *Academy English utilizes APA Format as well as MLA (SOL tested) **Includes Health Occupations/Industry Speakers and Seminars If a student takes AP Biology or AP Chemistry in their senior year, they will not take AP Environmental Science, Physics, or Psychology. Tentative Timeline of Implementation • Spring 2013 - Survey of Middle School Students • July 1, 2013 – Presentation to School Board • Fall 2013 - Determine Course Curricula - PLTW • November/December 2013 - Approval of Proposal • December - Partner Breakfast • February 2014 - Approval of New Courses • March 2014 - Interview/Hire new personnel • May 2014 - Selection of INITIAL Cohort of students for 2014-2015 school year
