  1. Join us as this ordinary chocolate cake goes through the extraordinary digestive system.

  2. The chocolate cake is now going to go through digestion The brain is the first part of the digestive system. When you see a food, it gets all the supplies ready for digestion.

  3. The Chocolate cake is entering the mouth. I am the mouth. When the piece of chocolate cake gets to my organ, I chew it up into smaller pieces using my teeth. When the chocolate cake is being chewed, saliva is squirted into me, the mouth, to soften the chocolate cake. I have a tongue that does a few things. One, is it provides taste for food. There are 4 different tastes, bitter ,sour ,salty & sweet. When the chocolate cake is all chewed up the tongue pushes the chocolate cake to the Esophagus.

  4. Now the chocolate cake is in the Esophagus Hi! I am the Esophagus. My job is to take the chewed chocolate cake and deliver it to the stomach. I am about 10 inches long. When my muscles move to deliver the chocolate cake, it is called peristalsis. Bye!

  5. The chocolate cake has now entered the Stomach I am the stomach and I break down the chocolate cake into smaller pieces. I do this by mixing the food with acid and digestive juices. I break the pieces up really small so the body can use it. The walls of the stomach contain a thick layer of mucous that protects the stomach from hydrochloric acids. When the pieces of food are in a form of porridge, my job is done! The food is now called chyme because my organ is done doing it’s job.

  6. The piece of cake has now entered the Small Intestine. I am the small intestine. My job is to take away the water that’s in the chyme/chocolate cake. I am 22 feet long. I look like a long twisted tube. I have 3 parts. The Duodenum, Jejunum & the Ileum. I absorb nutrients in me. I absorb iron in the Duodenum. I absorb vitamin v 12 and bile salt in the Ileum. Other nutrients called villi are taken in from the stomach to the Jejunum. Now the chyme/ chocolate cake has less water in it.

  7. The chocolate cake/chyme is now in the large intestine Hi! I’m the Large Intestine. My job is to take all the water from the chyme/chocolate cake and put it in the blood. I am 1.5 meters long. I am almost a square but not quite. Now I am referred to as the Greek name, colon.

  8. Now the Food is entering the Rectum. • Hi! I am the Rectum! My job is to store the chyme/ chocolate cake in my organ. I am 6 to 8 inches long. When the chocolate cake /chyme is ready to come out I send a message to the brain to tell the Anus to relax. When the anus relaxes you feel like you have to go to the bathroom. Then the chocolate cake comes out of the behind as feces. See ya!

  9. Done The Digestive System is now done! The Chocolate cake has transformed from chocolate cake to feces!! bye bye!!!!!!!!!
