  1. The Spirit of Adoption – Caring for the Orphans 01-27-13

  2. Introduction: • James 1:27 - Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. • Isaiah 1:17 - Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

  3. Caring for the Orphans: • Exodus 22:22-24 - “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. 24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless. • Psalms 82:3 - Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

  4. Caring for the Orphans: • Psalms 10:17-18 - You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. • God’s heart is for justice in the lives of the powerless

  5. Caring for the Orphans: • Foster care is not for the faint of heart. • Not everyone is called to foster care, • Compassion child • Prayer for wisdom and protection for those in the system • Become a support system for those in foster care.

  6. Caring for the Orphans through Adoption: • Adoption may not be the first choice but it may not second best choice either. • Every adoption story is amazing and special • The Will’s family adoption story……

  7. Caring for the Orphans through Adoption: The Spirit of Adoption • Romans 8:14-17 - 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba,Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

  8. Caring for the Orphans through Adoption: The Spirit of Adoption • If we start with Fear and Slavery wouldn’t we end up with confidence and freedom? • God has gotten to the root of the issue and calls us to be Adopted. This brings confidence and freedom.

  9. Caring for the Orphans through Adoption: The Spirit of Adoption • Why is it called in one translation, the Spirit of Adoption? • Romans 8:16 “…Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” • Not just a legal claim on us; • It also includes a deeper relationship and understanding of the incredible situation that we receive when we begin to comprehend the greatness of God’s love for us.

  10. Caring for the Orphans through Adoption: The Spirit of Adoption • Two things: • First, grow in the understanding of who God is. • Second, grow in the understanding of the greatness, abundant and lavish love God has for us.

Some studies have found that violence in residential institutions is six times higher than violence in foster care. • Every day 5,760 more children become orphans.
