Alan Paton • Born January 11, 1903 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal (now part of South Africa) • In 1935, he was principal of Diepkloof Reformatory for African boys (boys who had been in prison) • In 1936, he joined the South African Institute of Race Relations • In 1943, he wrote articles about crime, punishment, and penal reform • In 1946, he toured prisons in Europe, the United States, and Canda. While on this tour, he began writing Cry, the Beloved Country, which was published in 1948.

  3. Alan Paton • He traveled the world, speaking about the conditions in South Africa • South Africa confiscated his passport in the 1960s, not returning it until the early 1970s. • He died in 1988 of throat cancer after a long life of promoting racial equality.
