    2. WHAT IS MOTIVATION The American Heritage dictionary describes motivation as: The act or process of motivating, the state of being motivated; something that motivates; an inducement or incentive.

    3. CONTINUED Synonyms of motivation include: encouragement, inspiration, stimulation. Motivation is the internal drive that activates behaviour and gives it direction. It is the inner power or energy that pushes one to act, perform actions and achieve result.

    4. TYPES OF MOTIVATION Intrinsic motivation: driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external influence.

    5. CTD Nurses who feel called to the profession derive pleasure and inner satisfaction from giving quality patient care. They are the ones that have gone above and beyond to help their patients to achieve positive health outcome.

    6. CTD Extrinsic motivation: originates outside the individual: includes Rewards-money, promotion, praise Punishment or threats of-suspension Competition-need to win, trophies, cheering crowd, CHEER LOUD AND LONG FOR OUR AWARDEES

    7. FCMC Experience Consistent feedback Nurse of the year Aesthetic work environment Punishment(suspension, termination)

    8. WHY MOTIVATE NURSES? Nurses make up about 70% of health care work force, Spend more time with patients Usually front liners Poor remuneration, work environment

    9. WHY MOTIVATE NURSES? Limited opportunities for growth and development brain drain ( to other countries and professions) Education is highly subsidized in Nigeria, other countries reap the benefit.

    10. WHY MOTIVATE NURSES? High Nurse: Patient ratio, 1:10-12 (WHO 1-4) Overwork + fatigue frustration and prone to mistakes and poor quality of care poor client satisfaction

    11. WHY MOTIVATE NURSES? higher patient mortality and morbidity Poor ambassadors of the profession-less attractive to potential nurses

    12. brain drain + poor enrolment= unsustainable health manpower

    13. MOTIVATION THEORY humans have DESIRES which drives their needs such as food, shelter, love; acceptance among others, which drive (motivate) them to take actions to meet the needs.
