  1. MACP Awards for Excellence • Competition among similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies. • Redesigned to be compatible with the National Law Enforcement Challenge that is sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

  2. Awards • $6,000 grant from OHSP to purchase traffic safety equipment or schedule overtime traffic enforcement patrols. • A personalized plaque from AAA Michigan. • Automatic consideration in the national law enforcement challenge (IACP)

  3. The Application • The body of the application should showcase your agency’s traffic safety efforts in the following categories: • Introduction • Policies and Guidelines • Training of Officers • Incentives and Recognition of Officers • Public Information and Education • Enforcement Activities • Effectiveness of Efforts • Innovation is an optional section for Michigan’s program

  4. Important • Public Information and Education - provide a narrative of your public information and education efforts. • Enforcement Activity - provide the number of citations/warnings issued for safety belt/child seats, impaired driving and speeding for any of the best three (3) month period – they do not have to be consecutive months. • Effectiveness of Efforts – provide a narrative of your effectiveness. Include: • Change in safety belt use. • Numbers of speed and alcohol related fatalities and injury crashes. • Results of enforcement activity

  5. Winner – Category 1 to 10 Officers The Memphis Police Department identified a traffic problem involving speed, sight distance and crossing guard visibility. Improving guard visibility, reducing traffic speed and placing innovative signage to raise driver awareness all served to correct this potentially dangerous traffic problem.

  6. Winner – Category 11 to15 Officers Utilizing advanced training for officers along with strict enforcement and an extensive public information and education program, the Dowagiac Police Department has had a significant impact on traffic crashes.

  7. Winner – Category 16 to 25 Officers The Sturgis Police Department has implemented a program called “Safe Kid Zones” to keep children safer while walking to and from school. The department utilized extensive education efforts and technology to address this problem.

  8. Winner – Category 26 to 49 Officers The Van Buren Township Police Department recognize the importance of traffic safety and created a traffic services team to address traffic safety problems.

  9. Winner – Category 50 to 80 Officers To reduce alcohol-related crashes, the Novi Police Department developed an “OWI” tracking sheet to identify locations where officers have encountered people who have been drinking. This allows the department to identify areas in need of increased enforcement.

  10. Winner – Category 81+ Officers Through a combination of officer training and participation in statewide safety belt and drunk driving mobilizations, Farmington Hills police officers take a strict stance with unbelted and drunk motorists.

  11. Winner – Sheriff’s Office Utilizing specialized training of their traffic officers, targeted enforcement in problem areas and participation in specialized enforcement efforts, the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office has been instrumental in reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities in the county.

  12. Winner – State Police Post The Iron River Post assures all troopers receive specialized training in occupant protection and enforcement efforts. The Iron River Post utilized innovative public information and education efforts, including using store marquees to post traffic safety messages, using OHSP community kits and staffing educational booths at fairs and events.

  13. Successful Programs • Complete the application and submit it to the MACP by the deadline. • Follow the format outlined and document your current activity.
