E N D
Reaction to the Prompt • topic that grabs your interest • topic you’ve always wanted to talk about • topic you always talk about
Then what do we need to do • to fight that stress • & whip up an impressive speech? • We prepare. But,
The Ultimate Solution • Go home. • Practice. • Practice. • and practice more. • Now it’s time for you to practice!
What can we prepare? • Maintaining your cool CONFIDENCE • Following the 3 Steps of Impromptu Speaking… by me :)
Step#1:Figure out the Main Idea ASAP • Thesis statement of an essay • Conciseness • fancy words • jargon • SAT words • 70%, 30%
Step#2:Branch Out • Branches? • factual evidence (data, statistics) • analogies (if they seem fit) • anecdote • Gather sub-ideas into groups • don’t get too petty with details • progress from one branch to another
Step#3:Opening & Closing • Always open & end on a strong note! • First impression
Bad Opening Examples • Disclaimers • “My topic is really boring..” • “I’m not prepared for this ㅠㅠ" • “I’m sorry!” • DON’T EVER APOLOGIZE ON THE PODIUM (unless you swear by accident)
Good Opening Examples • Catchy, arousing interest • “I came to a shocking conclusion.” • “This was one topic that was really interesting.” • Try not to talk about the “topic.” • Don’t read out your topic. Try other ways to introduce the topic/POV.
Sample Topic: Should we provide support to North Korean defectors?
Conclusion • A simple “say what you said” is fine • But to go one step further, • a meaningful sentence—the final touch
So, • We talked about the 3 Steps of impromptu Speaking. • But what if I don’t have anything to talk about? - CONTENT • And how do we say it nicely? - STYLE
Content#1: Personal Experience • Keeps subject matter within your grasp • Create empathy • Provides you with something crucial: • a THEME • Deflect potential criticism • Caution: • Water down the unnecessary details
Content#2: Current Events • READ THE NEWS!!! • Excellent fodder for any time of speech • Makes you look • prepared • authority • credibility • It’s just good for you.
Content#3: Quotes • Memorize one or two. • Pick concise ones • that can be applied to multiple occasions • “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” • “Our greatest glory is not in ever falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
Style#1:The “Um” Trap Common Mistake • Cancels out intensity & attention • “Um”professional • If you say more than fifteen fillers -0.3 points off!! • Consciously remind yourself not to say: • um’s • ahh’s • like’s • you know’s
How to Avoid the “Um” Trap • Start every sentence with an actual, deliberate word • Record yourself • Figure out when you use fillers • when you begin a sentence? • um’s instead of conjunctions? • end of a sentence?
Pause. • Much less distracting. • (Pause) • … an effective device! • If you get stuck? • 1. Resist the Urge to Say Um • 2. Pause for a while. • Act like you know what you’re doing • Just don’t pause throughout your entire speech.
Style#2:Gestures & Eye Contact • Use gestures, but don’t overuse them. • Make sure they carry meaning.
Style#4:Signposting • Guides the audience • Keeps you on track • The Rule of 3: • Say what you’re going to say • Say it • Say what you said
Now it’s your turn. • Volunteers?
