  1. Introduction to Human Computer Interaction Dr. Cheryl Seals Computer Science & Software Engineering Auburn University

  2. H C I “Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. Humans beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.“ Albert Einstein 1879 - 1955

  3. HCI? • Interactive Systems vs. Non-interactive Systems • How do we interact? • Media • 5 sensory modalities • I/O devices • Process • Models and theories

  4. HCI? It is a scientific and engineering discipline concerned with the theory, models, design, implementation and evaluation of interactive computational systems for the benefit of humans. Its goal is to make such systems more accessible, usable and usable to humans. HCI primarily study computer technology and people psychology .

  5. HCI? • The theory (science) of: • Human • Computer • And the practice (engineering) of: • Interaction between the two • The practice involves Iterative Design, i.e. cycles of: • Design • Implementation • Evaluation • Highly interdisciplinary • Computer Science, Industrial Design/Engineering, Psychology, Graphic Design, Ergonomics, Anthropology, Sociology, Education...

  6. H C I (Re)Design solutions (Re)Analyze task or problem Evaluate Implement

  7. HCI History • History of HCI

  8. History (Brad Myers)

  9. Historical User Interface Examples

  10. HCI Today • History & future of HCI

  11. HCI Future • Vannevar Bush’s • More HCI History
