  3. COSEE-West • was established in 2002 • 2012 is our 10th year • based in the Los Angeles area and online • serves a range of audiences • - is a partnership

COSEE-West Mission & Goals Mission: - connect ocean scientists, educators, students, & the community. - Improve K-12 ocean sciences education by providing high quality science content & resources for educators. Center for Ocean Sciences Education ExcellenceWest Goals: - Develop partnerships between ocean scientists & educators. - Foster communication among ocean science education programs. - Promote ocean education as an interdisciplinary tool for improving science education. =

  7. OOS Workshop: Overview Every day: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Different location We will provide: light breakfast & lunch You bring: mug/cup/water bottle, if you can a laptop computer, if you can USB drive Optional: gift shop money, camera, set up carpools for the rest of the week

OOS Workshop: Overview Wednesday @ Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Your feet & legs might get wet Sunscreen, sunglasses, jacket, hat Some walking involved Bring parking stub inside for validation Thursday @ Jet Propulsion Lab BRING: current photo ID Your car may be inspected PLEASE BE ON TIME Walking involved (for tour) USC to JPL is about 19 miles 30 to 60 min, free parking

  10. OOS Workshop: Overview Friday @ SCMI Parking is on the street, may need to walk a bit Collectively we’ll set a due date for the lesson plans.

  11. Goals of the Week • - Introduce you to different ways to make • observations about the ocean (both • remotely and in situ) • Introduce you to websites/resources to • find real time or near real time data • Start experimenting with data to see how • you might use it in your classroom

Stipends -Fill in stipend paperwork completely -attend all sessions -complete daily evaluations (mostly online) -turn in lesson plan = $500 Also, we would like you use your lesson in your classroom and give us some feedback on how it went and/or revise your lesson plan and send us your revised version.

What’s on your jump drive? 10–10:30 Ocean Literacy (Lynn Whitley) 10:30-11 Activities: Globe toss; OOS puzzles; ocean observing overview (Pat Harcourt) 11-11:15 Break 11:15-12 Why use OOS? Online activity and intro to online data (Pat Harcourt) 12–12:30 LUNCH

  14. Today’s Agenda 12:45-1:20 Captain Gordon Boivin will share the challenges and advantages of shipboard sampling. Activities: water quality sampling 1:30 – 2:30 Lecture by David Needham: Long term sampling and marine microbiology. Visit lab 2:30 – 3:15 Teachers work in pairs or small groups to discuss and compile lesson ideas; do online evaluations ONLINE: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9VZ7V6N 10 min. to rotate through gift shop in groups of 6. Sign out, turn in name tag. 3:15 – 3:30 Return to dock, boat leaves at 3:30 promptly! 3:30 – 5:00 Return to SCMI by 5 pm.

  17. Globe Toss/Participant Intros Land or Ocean? Name, school, grade taught 3. Favorite food 4. If you could be a remote sensing instrument, what would you want to measure? Everyone receives an icosahedron globe to take home. You do not need them the rest of the week.
