  1. Evitherm project mid-term review Work Package 6 presented by F.Pavese for Mauro Battuello CNR-IMGC Work Package Leader

  2. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties CONTENTS • Main aims for this work package • Progress to date • Key tasks for Sep – Dec 2004 (launch of pay-site) and for 2005

  3. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties • Emissivity is a difficult property to understand and apply correctly because of the need to correctly specify the property in terms of specific parameters (eg, spectral, total, solar, integrated, directional, normal) relevant to the application. • Spectral and temperature ranges will also generally be different for applications involving different materials such as steel, plastic, food, plants and so on. • An additional complication for users is that emissivity is strongly influenced by surface effects arising from different methods of preparation, surface finish, thermal history and environmental interaction

  4. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties Main aims for this work package • making users more knowledgeable about thermal radiative properties, • better understand its implications, • to be better equipped to select the most appropriate values for their applications.

  5. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties To achieve its objective WP6 provides information on: • facilities for measurements in this field in Europe, including measurement providers, measurement devices, testing equipment, calibration and testing laboratories • qualified sources of technical data in the field and provide a review of the identification of relevant materials from appropriate data sources • existing material related tobest practice guides, measurement procedures and use of measurement devices. Identify additional needs • certified reference materials and their sources of supply continue

  6. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties • review of topics of interest and overview of technology and research outputs in the field plus an overview of where future work is required • norms, accreditation rules and legal metrology requirements • links with organisations for standardisation and with accreditation bodies

  7. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties WP6 tasks and members leading them Task 6.0Define technical content of WP and provide a review of all data entries. Evaluate material from other WPs. IMGC (Italy), WP leader Task 6.1Provide information for resources database (measurement providers, measurement devices, testing equipment, calibration and testing laboratories NPL (United Kingdom) Task 6.2Identify qualified sources of technical data. Provide a review of the identification of relevant materials from appropriate data sources. LNE (France) continue

  8. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties continue WP6 tasks and members leading them Task 6.3Collect existing material related to best practice guides, measurement procedures and use of measurement devices ZAE (Germany) Task 6.4Provide information on reference materials & sources. Needs for additional reference materials, RISOE (Denmark) Task 6.5Review of topics of interest and overview of technology and research outputs in the field plus an overview of where future work is required. AIPT (Italy)

  9. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties Progress to date • WP tasks were defined and agreed among the members • Contributed to raising awareness of evitherm in industry by providing lists of European journals and organisations for promotion of the evitherm project and thermal events, and a list of training courses for the project website. • Produced a basic introductory text and a short-form guide (on emissivity) for users of the website • Produced schemes to direct users to the right data continue

  10. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties • 354 entriesassembled in the database (data compiled by the Tasks leaders with the contribution of all other members) The majority of the data compiled for the free-pages of the website was in the categories of: • documentation • measurement services • measurement good practice • suppliers • frequently asked questions

  11. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties Key tasks for Sep – Dec 2004 (launch of pay-site) and for 2005 • Provide information on: to be carried out by • Documents (books, papers,… )all members • Reference materials RISOE + all other members • Written standardsall members • Research projectsIMGC, AIPT + all other members • Governmental contactsIMGC + all other members • Data qualification statementsall members • Measurement methodsZAE + all other members continue

  12. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties • Provide numerical data of radiative properties relevant to industry to be made available on the evitherm database (to be carried out by CNR-IMGC and by all other members) • Update the existing data (to be carried out by tasks leaders + contribution by all other members) continue

  13. WP6: Emissivity and other infrared- optical properties • Further development of the introductory text. Additional and more detailed information will be provided on: • physics of thermal radiation, • definition of terms used in discussing thermal radiation phenomena, • definition of the properties and the notion of their parameters dependency, interrelationships between properties, • links to relevant publications to go deeply into the topics, • specific guides for users interested in knowing more about measurement methods, their advantages and disadvantages and operational limits, (CNR-IMGC, with the contribution of all other members)
