  1. Multiscale modelling to predict the risk of osteoporotic bone fractures VPHOP Integrated project

  2. Osteoporosis is a killer • OP fractures kill as many women as breast cancer • 30 to 50% of all women and 15 to 30% of all men will face an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime • 4,000,000 fractures every year cost Europe €30,000,000,000 • Forecast to double by 2050 • 250,000 elders will die of related complications within 12 months, all others will remain impaired

  3. The VPHOP Consortium • 21 partners • 7 industrial partners • 5 clinical centres • Research leaders in: Biomechanics, biomaterials, computer sciences, biomedical informatics, mechanobiology, CAS, technology assessment, medical imaging & instrument.

  4. EOSTM Dual Energy system • Scanning area: 5-175 cm (sitting - upright) • Sim. bi-planar acquisition, 20 s, head-to-toe • Low dose (÷ 10 vs. film/screen) • 3D reconstruction of ext. geometry • Bi-planar DXA

  5. Actibelt® • 3D accelerometer integrated in belt buckle • Objective measurement of neuromuscular condition during ambulatory visit • Monitoring long term activity (5 days)

  6. Organ-level Model Personalised risk of fracture Clinical workflow Constitutive Equation Loading spectrum Tissue-level Model Disease & pharma (pre-computed) Effect of augmentation Body-level Model Bone Remodelling Model Augmentation Model

  7. VPHOP PR(t) curve [predicted]
