The Engine Room of Highest Levels of Excellence: ICE (Stefano & Wasylyshyn, 2005) Integrity: the ability to tell the truth Courage: Having sufficient confidence in yourself & your team to give them enough latitude & autonomy to perform well Empathy: The ability to authentically care for others

  16. Work ethics Ethical means that which is morally good or considered morally right – as apposed to that which is legally or procedurally right. Ethical people strive to operate with an altruistic intent; utilise empowering rather than controlling strategies to influence others; endeavour to cultivate virtues & abstain from vices to build own character. A virtuous character is a building block for leadership and personal excellence. The subject matter of ethics is character, that is, one can have a charismatic personality but a debased character.

  17. Work ethics One can have a charismatic personality but a debased character. One can be charming, inspirational, dynamic, magnetic, and glamorous but their core values could be based on greed, egoism, and power abuse. From the core values emanate toxic sub-values which express one’s dysfunctional behaviours such as malice, deception, arrogance, intimidation, conceit, coercion, anger and absence of trust, gratitude, and harmony (Sankar, 2003: 48). This toxicity erodes sustainable success.

  18. Perseverance: never give up!!! Perseverance will get you over the walls & barriers & challenges that you are confronted with. Learn to have success with failure. Do not repeat the same mistakes in your persistence, but make necessary adjustments. People that made history never gave up.

  19. The power of perseverance: An Example – who is this man? He failed in business in 1831. He was defeated for the legislature in 1832. He saw his sweetheart died in 1835. He suffered a complete nervous breakdown in 1836. He was defeated for Speaker in 1838. He was defeated for Congress in 1843. He was defeated for the Senate in 1855. He was defeated for the vice Presidency in 1856. But he was elected President of the USA in 1860 .

  20. Sacrifice There will always be sacrifice in a leadership role Personal Family time Work & non-work balance Health problems Professional Never sacrifice your own principles and ethics - though compromise might be necessary with new information

  21. Manage the sacrifice Syndrome through authenticity, that is, “A state of healthy alignment between one’s values and behaviour.” It becomes even more critical for a contemporary business person who needs to have a healthy balance between work and non-work life. (Ruderman & Rogolsky, 2001)

  22. GET REAL & DETOX: BE AUTHENTICYou can’t develop to a level of excellence if you are fake! It’s not easy being phony. Think of how much energy it takes to behave in ways that are out of sync with your true values, priorities, hopes, characteristics and style!(Ruderman & Rogolsky, 2001)

  23. Authenticity as an ingredient for excellence Define your core values to guide you, guard you and gauge you: Possess integrity – keep your word even if it costs you. Be honest and trustworthy - if they can’t trust you, why should they ever follow you? Be transparent Listen with a giving attitude that seeks to bring forth the contribution in someone not listening with your limiting assessments, opinions & judgments. Speak out against wrong & honour those who stand by the truth. Do not gossip and do not attract gossip. Do not be greedy to gain at the expense of others.

Authenticity calls for demonstration of self discipline Self-discipline enables you to convert your values into consistent action Authenticity requires continuous effort and overcoming hurdles ranging from societal norms to organizational cultures Requires commitment & dedication to the cause not just the vision Guard yourself against moral failure

  25. The fibre to add sustainable value to your ladder of successful life is in being authentic To add value you need to be true to yourself and be authentic and choose the path that works for you. Eliminate hypocrisy and deception in you and in the organization. Where authenticity and truth presides: Trust is evident among staff The leader has less mental clutter People feel the freedom to be transparent The leader has credibility when she or he speaks.

In decision making ensure that your choices confirm not compromise your values to be authentic & add value Weigh out the options in front of you Ask if those choices force you to compromise personal values Seek wise counsel and count the cost Decide based on sound, value adding principles Act on your decision swiftly and firmly Don’t be an extension of other people’s opinions –be your own person

  27. Responsibility You have to take responsibility for your actions, for your life, and the consequences of your behaviour.

  29. And the price? Fulfillment in becoming the professional that is respected in your field and industry; the mentor that people will want to look up to and imitate. That is, becoming the role model that positively influence others and add value to their lives!!
