  2. Introduction Many of ORD’s research projects relate to broad scientific themes, such as biological and chemical indicators or computational chemistry. These themes and projects are described in the ORD Strategic Research Action Plans (StRAPs) FY16-FY19. https://www.epa.gov/research/strategic-research-action-plans-2016-2019 Other research projects are discreet studies resulting from requests by clients or contacts with collaborators (in a number of scientific disciplines).

Introduction cont. • Unique expertise is provided by the Environmental Chemistry Branch in the areas of: • Mass spectrometry analysis and interpretation – high resolution mass spectrometry, GC/LC-MS, ICP/MS • Computational chemistry • Environmental analytical chemistry • Geophysics • Geochemistry • Site characterization with XRF – metals including uranium (new) • Sample preparation and cleanup techniques • Analysis and interpretation using specialty instrumentation for < 10 µm particle size support: SEM, laser-particle sizer

Direct Technical Support • Chemical expertise and analytical support • for targeted analytes: • Hanlin-Allied Olin Site – Mercury (Hg) fate and transport review • PFOA/PFOS analytical and technical expertise support to Region 4, Decatur, AL, other Regions and program offices: OPPT, OW • PCBs in school caulking – analytical support in identifying and isolating congeners of PCBs – Region 3

Direct Technical Support cont • Pilsen Pb site characterization and assessment of Pb dispersion from nearby smelters into an urban environment – Region 5 • Vapor intrusion of volatile organics - Pearl Harbor, Montrose, and Del Amo – Region 9 • Chisman Creek - Vanadium speciation – review of potential geochemical transformation products of vanadium from fly ash processes – Region 3

Direct Technical Support cont • Wright Chemical – TIC identification and classification of 1980’s site data – Region 4 • NY Army Depot - Reviewed geophysical surveys that were conducted by the responsible party to investigate the vertical deposition of munitions debris material at the site  – Region 2 • Alaska – Technical review of reports on dust suppression chemicals and providing technical assistance for future investigations of unknown chemicals in suppressants – Region 10/Tribes

  8. Direct Technical Support cont • Ft Riley – Uranium in groundwater – provided direct technical support to determine whether the source of uranium was natural or depleted. US Army/EPA direct request • Gold King Mine – Geochemical support for characterizing inorganic chemical processes occurring during and after the spill. Chemical transformation simulations and analysis and interpretation of the data were provided. – EPA direct request • Tire Crumbs – anecdotal evidence of carcinogenicity has led State (CA EPA) and Federal agencies (CDC, EPA) to investigate the physical and chemical properties of tire crumbs. Direct request to EPA from White House – ECB will be provide SEM, EDS, XRF and sample preparation support for project
